Planning a ski vacation is not an easy task. There are too many variables1）—snow quality， customer service， terrain2）， steeps， skill level， and crowds. Fortunately， some mountains have it all and won&apos；t fail you even if it hasn&apos；t snowed for weeks.

Bansko is an old town， set on a flat valley floor in the scenic Pirin National Park， that has been catapulted3） into the 21st century by installation of modern lifts on its slopes and construction of a lot of new lodgings， many near the base of the new access gondola4） to the slopes. The resort has become increasingly popular with British skiers thanks to its great value compared to Western European resorts， and it&apos；s an ideal place to learn to ski.

The result is that pressure on the slopes is low. No queues， no crowds， pistes5） rarely reduced to boilerplate6） by heavy traffic—and the scenery is remarkable.

Avoriaz， France

Perched on a sloping shelf above a dramatic high cliff a few kilometres from lower， long-established Morzine， Avoriaz is probably the best designed of the many purpose-built resorts thrown up in France in the 1960s. One particularly neat trick is that the resort is sunny but most of the local slopes are shady. It&apos；s on the main lift circuit11） of the Portes du Soleil area， comprised of 12 resorts on either side of the French/Swiss border， with 650km of pistes to explore.

This resort is valued for its variety of terrains suitable for every level skier. The mountain has five interconnected peaks providing a chance to ski anything from steep runs and difficult bumps to groomed12） trails for beginners. Many people&apos；s favorites are the alpine coaster and alpine slides. The resort is known for being very family-friendly. It has ski and snowboarding schools that offer lessons， women&apos；s programs， guides， camps and other special deals. The wide open runs and the resort&apos；s 2，358 acres of terrain across four mountains bring thousands of people every season. The place has a lot of history. Breckenridge was the first ski resort in the state to allow snowboarding and it hosted the World Snowboard Championships in 1986.
