紐約（New York）是美國第一大城市，世界第四大城市。你知道它有哪些綽號嗎？

1.The Empire City 帝國城市

David Stravitz first printed this name in his photographic book titled New York, Empire City:1920—1945. It represents New York City's wealth and resources. First president George Washington saw New York as“the seat of empire”.

大衛·斯塔拉維茲在他出版的畫冊《紐約，帝國城市：1920—1945》中首次將紐約稱為“帝國城市”。它代表了紐約市的財富和資源。美國第一任總統喬治·華盛頓稱紐約為“帝王之座”。

2.The Big Apple 大蘋果

Jazz musicians called New York City“the Big Apple”in the 1920s and 1930s. They got the term from a horse track worker who said where to a horserace in NYC was referred to as“the Big Apple”.

二十世紀二三十年代，爵士樂音樂家們稱紐約市為“大蘋果”。他們主要是從賽馬場工人口中得知的，那些賽馬場工人在談論紐約賽馬地時稱紐約市為“大蘋果”。

3.The City that Never Sleeps 不眠之城

New York City's nickname is popularized from lyrics in the song New York, New York by the one and only Frank Sinatra.

紐約的這個綽號之所以有名，是因為獨一無二的弗蘭克·辛納屈在歌曲《紐約，紐約》的歌詞里唱過。

4.World's Biggest Urban Playground 全球最大的城市運動場

NYC was named this because immigrant children played stickball（n.<美>棍球）throughout the New York streets in the 1930s.

紐約市得此名字是因為在二十世紀三十年代的時候，移民的孩子總會在紐約街道上打棍球。

5.The Melting Pot 大熔爐

The term Melting Pot was first used in publication by Israel Zangwill in his play adapted from Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet titled The Melting Pot in 1908.

“大熔爐”這個稱呼最初是伊斯瑞爾·贊格威爾在1908年的戲劇《大熔爐》里面用的，這部戲劇是他對莎士比亞的《羅密歐與朱麗葉》的改編。

6.Manhattan 曼哈頓

Manhattan was the nickname used by the Algonquin Indians when the island was first settled by the Dutch in the 1620s. The name Manhattan was quickly adopted by the settlers and today is the official name of the most famous borough（行政區）.

十七世紀二十年代，荷蘭人首次在這個島定居下來的時候，阿爾岡琴族印第安人就已經用“曼哈頓”這個綽號稱呼這個島了。定居下來的荷蘭人迅速接受了這個名字。如今，“曼哈頓”已經是這個著名的行政區的官方名稱了。

7.The City of Skyscrapers 摩天樓之城

New York City has more skyscrapers than any other city in the world. Many NYC buildings have had the honor of the tallest in the world at one point.

紐約市擁有比全球任何城市都多的高樓大廈，很多紐約的大樓都曾經有“世界最高”的美稱。

8.The Metropolis 大都會

Metropolis is the fictional name of the New York City cloned in the comic book Superman.

“大都會”這個名字來自于一本叫《超人》的漫畫，漫畫中的這個城市就是克隆紐約的。

9.The Financial Hub 世界金融中心

“With Wall Street leading the charge, New York City is the financial capital of the world.”enough people said.

很多人都說，只要華爾街還占主導，我們就可以說紐約市就是全球的金融中心。

10.Gotham City 高譚市

Washington Irving wrote a satire titled the Salmagundi Papers calling New York City the name Gotham in 1807. Batman and DC Comics took it from there.

華盛頓·歐文在1807年寫了一部名叫《雜談報》的諷刺作品，他在其中稱紐約市為“高譚市”。《蝙蝠俠》跟DC漫畫公司都是從這里引用了這個名字。
