You Are an Angel Coming Down to the Earth——ln Memory of Professor Jiang Yujiao, Director of theConfucius Institute at the University of Yaounde II in Cameroon
December 3th, 2018 is a tearfuland grievous day, because onthis day, we lost a great director, andstudents of the Confucius Instituteat the University of Yaounde II lost agood teacher and “mother”. DirectorJiang Yujiao passed away onemonth ago, and her kindness is stillremembered. I had imagined that itwas just a dream, and Director Jiangwould come back when I woke up.However, the reality has always beencruel. When realizing that the factis irreversible, I could do nothingbut dry my tears, pick up my penand write down my impression ofDirector Jiang, in memory of theangel who came down to the Earth.
At the beginning of 2017,Professor Jiang Yujiao came toYaounde and assumed office asDirector of the Confucius Institute atthe University of Yaounde II. Beforemeeting Director Jiang, the image offemale professors in my mind wasgenerally like this: simple dress, plain looking, being quiet and kind.It was not until I met Director Jiangin the meeting that day did I findher an elegant poet with delicatemakeup, graceful words and vibranttemperament. Her cadencedvoice was filled with poetic charm, while her brilliant smile wasbrimming with girlish vitality. Istill remember that, after the briefself-introduction, Director Jiangshared with us an interesting story. On a morning when she got up,mangoes outside the window fell allover the ground because of the rainlast night. She happened to hear aCameroonian student reciting thepoem A Spring Morning in Chinese, and bantered with him, saying,“Itshouldn't be 'how many are thefallen flowers', but 'how many arethe mangoes'!” The student wasconfused and argued that DirectorJiang was wrong, for he learned theverse from his teacher. To removehis confusion, Director Jiangtalked with him about the beautyof Chinese poems and the richperformance of Chinese language. The student was fascinated andappreciated Director Jiang. And thatwas the first impression DirectorJiang left on me: a benign poet andscholar.
There was a time when Itook courses at the adult trainingclass of the Confucius Institute atthe University of Yaounde II, andevery morning when I arrived atthe classroom, I could enjoy thebeautiful soprano singing classicssuch as“Beautiful Grassland IsMy Home”, “China My Love” and“Ode to Yangtze River”. I oncethought that it was a teacher playingChinese music for teaching Chineselanguage, but I found out laterthat it was Director Jiang who waspracticing singing. Director Jiangnot only loved singing but alsosang very well, for she had receivedprofessional vocal training. Topromote Chinese culture andattract more Cameroonians to learnChinese, Director Jiang often sangin various cultural activities held bythe Confucius Institute, and she gavesignificant support to the brandedactivity of the Confucius Institute atthe University of Yaounde II-“Voiceof Cameroon” Singing Contest ofChinese Songs. In 2017, to celebratethe CPC Founding Day, the ChineseEmbassy in Cameroon held aRed Song competition, in whichDirector Jiang led the faculty of theConfucius Institute to participateand won the second place. Sheoften encouraged teachers to teachChinese songs in class, for there isno boundary for music and it is theeasiest and most popular way topromote Chinese culture. And thatwas the second impression DirectorJiang left on me: a singer loving herlife and work.
However, for the faculty andstudents of the Confucius Instituteat the University of Yaounde II andthose who acquainted with DirectorJiang, titles like poet, scholar andsinger are far from describing herbeauty and kindness. Director Jiangwas modest and courteous withoutbeing arrogant as a knowledgeablescholar or being commanding asan authority. She believed thateveryone is equal and should betreated with courtesy. When therewas a guest, she always madetea by herself and showed thewarmest reception regardless ofhis nationality, race, gender, age, occupation or social status. Shenever bothered others but wouldspare no effort to help when othersturned to her. I rememberedthere was a student died in a caraccident on his way to the ConfuciusInstitute, whose family was too poorto prepare a funeral. Director Jiang carried on a fund-raising and contributed the most among the faculties.Last March, Director Jiang was invited to lecture onChinese literature at the University of Maroua for oneweek, and she lived in ACAMAS, a place arranged forChinese language teachers. Last September, Ms. ZangPauline, the first local Chinese teacher in Cameroonwas in hospital due to critical illness. Director Jiangvisited her and helped to pay all the hospital billswithout hesitation after recognizing Ms. Zang wascash-strapped, and organized a wide range fund-raising for her. Unfortunately, Ms. Zang failed toovercome the disease and passed away. At Ms. Zang'sfuneral, bearing the greatest grief, Director Jiang notonly delivered a moving eulogy, but also knelt andkowtowed to pay her respect.
The good will acts from Director Jiang are toomany to be narrated even if I am given three days andnights to do so. Her integrity, goodness, generosityand cordiality make locals respectfully address heras \"mother\". When there came the news of DirectorJiang's death, principals of all teaching sites inYaounde, Maroua and Douala telephoned one afteranother to confirm the news. Recognizing that MotherJiang would never come back, they all burst into tearsand were unwilling to accept the fact. On the secondday, when I was giving a class at the Les DegourdisElementary School of Yaounde, the principle rushedto give me a tight hug. Though tears pouring down hisface, he comforted me, \"Madame Jiang is a pure angel. The God can't stand to watch her suffer in the world, sotaking her away. She will be immortal in heaven.\"
On December 9th, we held a memorial service forDirector Jiang, and the representative of the ChineseEmbassy in Cameroon, Director Jiang's friendsfrom both China and Cameroon, directors of everycooperative teaching sites and students and faculty ofthe Confucius Institute were all present with sadnessand stern faces. In the memorial service, DirectorZhang, the representative of the Embassy, spoke highlyof Director Jiang's working attitude and devoting spirit;the dean of the business school in Cameroon delivereda eulogy with tears; and two philosophy professorsof the University of Yaounde I recited a poem which wasco-written by Director Jiang and them. Together with thefamily, the landlord who has rent houses to the ConfuciusInstitute for eight years bit her farewell, and her cleaninglady wailed in front of her portrait, refusing to leave_
Though I acquainted with Director Jiang in 2017, Ibarely got in touch with her because of job transfers. Buteven in my brief time with Director Jiang, her goodnesscould always touch me. There was a time when I had abad temper and did not get along well with my colleagues, which severely influenced my work. When Director Jiangcame to inspect teaching spots, she talked with me all nightlong regardless of her fatigue of the journey, enlighteningme from every aspect, comfortingme and encouraging me to makeadjustments and start a new life.In last summer vacation, I went toZhejiang Normal University to helptraining, and Director Jiang happenedto lead the summer camp back toChina. After knowing my journey toJinhua, she insisted on picking meup in the train station, and then sentme to the hotel where I would stay, for the fear that it would be unsafe fora girl to arrive alone at night. Everytime I recall these memories, I weptuncontrollably. Maybe when doing allthose things, Director Jiang had neverregarded herself as a director but anordinary teacher, treating us as herstudents. As for me, Director Jiang, the one who possessed a heart of gold, was like an angel who came down tothe Earth embedded with all the goodand noble qualities such as goodness, sincerity, enthusiasm and helpfulness.
With a few conversations withDirector Jiang, I learned that shehad great passion for the ConfuciusInstitute at the University of YaoundeII and Cameroon. She had beenmaking efforts silently with the hopethat our model Confucius Institutebuilding can be built into a localChinese teacher training base in thewest- central Africa. Just a monthbefore her passing away, DirectorJiang was still having meetings withus discussing the preparation for theChinese language teacher trainingsession in Francophone Africa and thehalf-finished local Chinese languageteacher journal. She once said, \"I'vebeen exploring and learning how tomanage the Confucius Institute forthe past two years. It is a pity that myterm of office comes to an end whenmy career is finally on track. If givenan opportunity, I sincerely hope thatI can help to continue promotingthe localization of Chinese languageteaching in Cameroon, for it is such asacred and glorious course.\" I neverforget her words. I met her for the lasttime the night right before she wentback to China to participate in theConfucius Institute Conference. Shehugged me before leaving, and I cannow still feel her temperature and thepositive energy she passed to me fromher emaciated but determined body.
Dear Ms. Jiang, at this moment,I really want to tell you that since thefarewell with you last month, youhave been away from Cameroon fora month. And we always believe thatit is just a short goodbye, and we arehere, at the Confucius Institute at theUniversity of Yaounde II waiting foryou. Until now, no one is willing toaccept the fact that you would nevercome back. Anyhow, we faculty willde finitely follow your example, stickto our posts, devote to our jobs andlive up to your expectations. Pleaseset your heart at rest, dear MotherJiang, and we will all be fine. We willtake your baton and insist on theinternational promotion of Chineselanguage to fulfill your dreams.Dearest director and mother, mayyour soul rest in peace and hopethat you can come back home often.
This article is dedicated toProfessor Jiang Yujiao, Directorof the Confucius Institute at theUniversity of Yaounde II, an angelwho came down to the Earth anda mother who is kind-hearted andgreat.J
