The significance of the Theatre Royal lies, in part,in that it is the last remaining example in the UK of a type of theatre which could once have been found in towns across the UK and in Europe.Built in 1819, the building was designed to house a theatre genre which has also virtually disappeared. The project launched with the support of heritage interests in 2005 had two aims, first to restore the historic theatre building and second to facilitate the revival and study of early nineteenth-century writing, acting and theatrical presentation.

Over the years the building suffered a series of inappropriate changes and a long period of neglect, including being used as a barrel store for a nearby brewery (it still owns the theatre freehold which is leased to the National Trust). The theater was partially restored in 1965 and since then has been fully operational, housing medium-scale professional touring product and local amateur productions. The problem which faced the design team responsible for the major, heritage-funded, restoration project was that of maintaining a working theatre rather than creating a museum, meeting the needs of current audiences and of modern productions while restoring the historic building as close to the original as possible.
The work was preceded by an intensive period of research. The seating and decor have been restored to the original design which featured a double row of boxes and two levels in the stalls. The stage, modernized in 1965, remained unchanged. It was already a large one and now has a forestage which draws the performer towards the audience, creating a level of intimacy not found in later nineteenthcentury theatres.Within this framework, production facilities have been upgraded and all services have been removed and completely redesigned.

The most significant visible change is the addition of a new foyer, adjacent to the existing site and providing more circulation space and extra bar and catering facilities. As well as making theatre visits more enjoyable, the new facilities enable the theatre increased earned income.
