I’d never heard of the yangqin— an 18th century Chinese stringed instrument — until this past Sunday, when I had the pleasure of hearing Eastman graduate and music master Wenzhuo Zhang’20E(MA)perform on it in an online concert.
Wenzhuo, a Chinese native, began her training on the yangqin at the age of five. When she was only 13, Wenzhuo was awarded a scholarship to the Arts School of Hebei Province; the highly competitive program only accepted a single yangqin student every two years. After graduation, she placed first in nationwide auditions(海選)and was admitted into the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing, where she was awarded her bachelor’s in yangqin performance in 2005. She obtained her doctorate from Boston University in music education in 2015 and studied ethnomusicology at Eastman from 2017 to 2019. Wenzhuo has performed with countless orchestras and ensembles(管弦樂隊和樂團)and won countless awards for her performances.
Before Wenzhuo performed five pieces on her yangqin, she presented a brief historical background of the instrument’s origin, and discussed its continued usage up to the present day. Determined by musicologists to be based off of the similarly-structured English hammered dulcimer(揚琴), the yangqin was first used in Chinese folk music performance and operas. Later, under?Mao Zedong, the yangqin became institutionalized(制度化)and classicized. Performances began to be sponsored by the state, and yangqin performers were given a path to higher levels of social mobility.
Wenzhuo performed four pieces, three tracing their origins to century old Chinese composers, and one from the modern era. Needless to say, Wenzhuo’s performances sounded wonderful. The yangqin is a unique and beautiful instrument, and its sound, coupled with Wenzhuo’s musical ability, allowed the four greatly differing pieces to stand together as a wonderful introduction to the instrument.
It was extremely interesting to learn about the yangqin and a joy to watch Wenzhuo perform on it from the comfort of my home this past Sunday. If you want to catch similar performances, which happen multiple times for free every week, visit?Eastman’s page devoted to live streamed events!

Like human beings, male dolphins call their friends when it comes time to attacks. A new study shows they do this by learning the“names”or signature whistles of their closest friends and remembering who consistently cooperated with them in the past. The findings indicate dolphins have a concept of team membership, previously seen only in humans.
Male dolphins typically cooperate as a pair or more, in what researchers call a first-order alliance(聯盟). These small groups work together to find and catch a fertile female. Males also cooperate in second-order alliances; these defend against competitor groups attempting to steal the female. But how do the males keep track of everyone in these complex groups? Scientists have argued that their whistles are key. Every dolphin learns a unique signature whistle from its mother and they recognize and remember each others’whistles, similar to how we recognize each other’s names.
To further find out how the male dolphins use their whistles, researchers turned to a population of dolphins living in the remarkably clear waters. From 2018 to 2019, researchers placed a speaker underwater and played the whistles of males to other males in their various alliances. The researchers expected that males hearing the whistle of their first-order alliance partners would respond most strongly. But when they reviewed the videos, they found the strongest responses came from males in the dolphins’second-order alliances—animals who had a steadfast(堅定的)cooperative history of fighting off attackers with them.
“It was so striking,”says one of the researchers.“In 90% of experiments, dolphins who heard whistles of second-order alliance members turned immediately and directly toward the speaker.”The findings suggest dolphins—like humans—have a“social concept of team membership, based on an individual’s previous cooperative investment(投入), rather than how good friends they are.”
28. What have the researchers found about the dolphins?
A. They have team concept.
B. They’re often attacked.
C. They like making friends.
D. They cooperated before.
29. How do male dolphins keep in touch with members in different alliances?
A. By recognizing their names.
B. By identifying the whistles.
C. By learning from their mother.
D. By responding with unique whistles.
30. How do researchers feel about the findings?
A. Reasonable.____ B. Surprised.
C. Unacceptable.? ____ ? ? D. Interested.
31. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To discuss a finding.
B. To explain a phenomenon.
C. To describe male dolphins.
D. To introduce a study.

Exploring associations between academic achievement and 24-hour daily activities, including sleep, sedentary(久坐的) time, light physical activity and moderate-to-vigorous(中強度) physical activity, a new study conducted by the University of South Australia found that the less time children spent on light physical activity, the better their academic outcomes. Specifically, researchers found that lower light physical activity is related to better numeracy(計算能力)and literacy, and that higher sedentary time is related to better literacy.
Lead researcher, Dr Dot Dumuid says the findings highlight how light physical activity can drain time from other movement behaviours, doing harm to academic achievement.
“As for what makes up a child’s best day for academic achievement, we have to consider all the different elements of that day—sleep, exercise, activity, rest and play—but of course, within the boundaries of 24 hours,”Dr Dumuid says.“If a child is spending more time on light physical activity—doing housework or playing computer games—then they have less time for sleep, study and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, all of which are good for academic achievement.”
The study assessed 528 children aged 9-11 years and 1874 children aged 11-12 years, with movement behaviours collected via a 7-day accelerometer, and academic achievement tested across literacy and numeracy skills. The results were consistent with different age groups, and different academic standards achieved with different accelerometers, indicating the stability of the study.
“Each day has a fixed budget of 24 hours, so if participating in light physical activity, children reduce the amount of time they could be spending on other activities,”Co-researcher, Professor Tim Olds says.“Our results are consistent with the 24-hour movement guidelines of around one hour of moderate-to-vigorous exercise per day, less than two hours of recreational screen time, and between 9-11 hours of sleep per night. If parents can aim for their children getting enough sleep, enough exercise and sufficient study time, then their children might not even have enough time for light physical activity – problem solved!”
32. The new study is mainly about the relationship between __________.
A. daily activities and academic results
B. sedentary time and academic performance
C. students’age and their movement behaviours
D. different accelerometers and academic standards
33. What does the underlined word“drain”in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Gain.? ? ? B. Devote.
C. Occupy.? ____ D. Waste.
34. Why did the study assess children of different ages?
A. To see the study outcomes of different ages.
B. To increase children’s interest in learning.
C. To make sure the reliability of the research.
D. To test to quality of the accelerometers.
35. What does Professor Tim Olds suggest parents let their children do?
A. Do less light physical activity.
B. Take more physical exercise.
C. Spend more time on housework.
D. Join in more light physical activities.

Watermelon Fever
I couldn’t stop thinking about watermelons. Giant, juicy and wonderful watermelons. I originally thought the happiest moment in my life was enjoying the tasty watermelon by myself in hot summer.
Having earned enough money by doing part-time job in my spare time, I finally saved my money to buy one all for myself. Mom said I couldn’t eat a whole chocolate cake by myself because it was bad for me and I would get sick. But a watermelon was fruit and I would eat it all up.
At the store, I picked up the biggest, the juiciest, the most wonderful watermelon and paid for it. Thrilled, I rolled it out the door, then along the sidewalk, three blocks to my house. Sweat dripped from my forehead onto the watermelon. Finally, I rolled it home and told mom all about it and declared that I would have it all by myself. On hearing it, mom frowned and warned that I would get sick.“No, I won’t. It’s fruit. It’s good for me. Please?”I begged.“I’ve been saving for it.”
Mom thought about it, then smiled as if she knew something. “OK, but only if you eat it outside,”she said. I rolled it out the back door to our picnic table. Mom brought out a knife. My sister followed her.“Ooh, watermelon,”she said.“I want some.” “Sorry,”I told her.“I’m going to eat it all by myself.” “Mom!”she whined.“Your sister saved her money and bought it herself. She decides what to do with it.”In the meanwhile, my brother and father came out from the bedroom.“Oh, yum, watermelon,”they said.“Can we have some?”“No way!”I told them.“I’m going to eat it all by myself.”“Mom!”my brother howled.“It’s your sister’s. She decides.” While saying it, mom cut the watermelon into pieces.“You can’t eat it all by yourself,”my brother challenged.“Yes, I can!”I answered.
