The other day， my friend Sara was telling me about a relationship with her colleague that was broken beyond repair. The two of them had been close. And then one day， Sara had， with the best intentions， done something that her colleague had completely misunderstood and had taken offense at.

Things became worse. Sara didn’t know what to say or do. She didn’t know how to repair the relationship. She began to get angry at her colleague for misunderstanding her and judging her. She felt justified （合理的） in her anger. The two of them still were not really speaking and certainly weren’t working together. The team， and their output， were suffering.

It was time to do something to rectify the situation. I asked Sara what she needed. After much thought， she told me that she needed her colleague to be willing to listen to her with an open mind， to at least consider that she hadn’t meant any harm by what she’d done and to apologize for taking things so seriously and making things so bad.

“Ah…” I said to her. “You want an apology.” I then asked her， “What do you think your colleague might want？” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Did you ever apologize？” I asked her. She shook her head no. “Do you think you might want to apologize？” I asked her. She shrugged （聳肩） her shoulders… then shook her head yes.

Sometimes we take so long to apologize. We justify our unwillingness， saying it won’t really make a difference. Or they should apologize first. Or we didn’t mean any harm and they misunderstood us. But I’ve found that an apology—a true， heartfelt apology—can work wonders. It can repair the unrepairable.

When Tara Wood brought her daughter to a grocery store to buy the four-year-old some cupcakes， she had no idea that would be a life-changing experience.

As Tara pushed her daughter Norah around the store last month， she passed an old man who was by himself. The person on Facebook told Tara that it was the first time they had seen Mr Dan smile since the death of his wife. Knowing that， Tara contacted Mr Dan， and ever since Norah and the 82-year-old have developed a friendship unlike any other. “She has shown me a depth of love， a depth that I didn’t know existed，” Mr Dan told the reporter.

Mr Dan told Tara that before meeting Norah， he hadn’t had one night of uninterrupted sleep. Anxiety kept him up at all hours and made him restless. After meeting Norah， he said he now sleeps soundly. What’s your opinion about finding good friends？ Speaking from my past experience， it is very difficult to find good friends that you can trust but once you have found them， they are worth keeping forever！ Therefore， I think friendship is the most important relationship that anybody could have.

The qualities I look for in a friend are a good sense of humor and sensitivity （體貼）. A friend would have to be strong-minded and highly spirited. I think that these qualities are the key qualities to look for in a good friend.

Even the best friends can still have arguments between themselves， though usually about more serious topics， rather than the usual childish arguments. Some matters can seriously affect friendship. If one of your friends started experimenting with harmful and dangerous drugs， what would you do？ A good friend would try to help as much as possible， while a bad example of a friend would simply shrug and turn a blind eye.

Not only the bad things affect friendship—good activities do too， such as bonding with one another， not just by going out on a night with them， but by spending quality time with them and talking to each other. This is a key aspect of a good friendship.

Good friends do not always have to be in the same age group as you. I have a good friend and she is 47 years old and I am 16.

Unfortunately， some people lose contact with their friends as they grow older， which is a sad way to lose a good friend.

I think friendship is one of the most important things in life because if you have no friends， you will have no happiness.
