FIRM PROFILE

John McAslan + Partners was founded by John McAslan in 1993 where he is Executive Chair and active in all of its work across studios in London, Edinburgh, Belfast and Sydney. John is particularly committed to interdisciplinary collaborations, which are a hallmark of the practice he leads.

John McAslan + Partners’ work has been widely published internationally. It has received over 200 international design awards, including 30 RIBA National and International awards, 3 European Union prizes for cultural heritage, and the Urban Land Institute (USA) Global Award for Excellence. Additionally, the practice was honoured with the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2014, and again in 2022.

Making Life Better

We create architecture that improves people’s lives:

We aim for an architecture that is rational and poetic, robust and delightful; we tread carefully and build with conviction; we tackle problems head on and think laterally; we deconstruct a brief and let a design emerge from close examination of the pieces; we don’t necessarily take ‘no’ for an answer; we believe the power of architecture extends much further than the dimensions of individual buildings; we believe architecture is about making life better.

Sense of Place:

We believe that buildings should be underpinned by a powerful idea; that the idea should be an intelligent and logical response to functionality and a sense of place; and the power of that idea should be embedded in the built form. That way, clients get the buildings they need and society gets the architecture it deserves.

Materiality, Amenity, Scale and Culture:

We believe that the city is one of humanity’s most impressive and precious cultural achievements. We also believe that cities are about connections, transport, communications, public spaces and joy. We believe in locating our buildings firmly within their contexts – not as slavish repetition but as a considered response to site, materiality, amenity, scale and culture.

Process Not Form:

We do not believe in the value of a house style; if we have a house style it is one of process, not of form. We are functionalists. We believe a good building is an expression of a clear and rational diagram. We are not idly blown by the winds of fashion. We believe in the value of research. We believe in contemporary design for a changing world.

Health and Wellbeing

Ensuring the health, safety and welfare of all our employees is a priority. We seek to achieve a balanced approach at all times, in terms of carefully monitored career development alongside initiatives to support physical and mental wellness across the practice.

We aspire to be transparent and collaborative, encouraging staff to be actively involved in the practice and to lead on improvement and change. We listen to what people have to say and value their contributions, believing this is key to great working relationships and the long-term success of the practice.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

When people of different backgrounds come together, something incredible happens – we see this at our frequent staff events, at design reviews, at the talks we host at the William Road Gallery or through client and public engagement.

A robust culture of inclusivity is embedded across the practice, and we ensure that everyone with whom we collaborate feels valued and respected – our commitment to EDI is to be transparent in all our working methodologies.

Diversity drives innovation and inclusion ignites creativity. We are proud of our team’s rich diversity of talent: at the last count 22 languages were spoken across the practice, so there’s a real international culture with a lively social scene and cultural trips abroad. By embracing equality, diversity and inclusion, we’re designing a more vibrant, dynamic world.

Educational Bursaries

JMP-funded bursaries administered via the Royal Institute of British Architects and the American Institute of Architects have ensured that the practice remains actively involved in design education.

The bursaries exist to support architectural students, graduates and newly-qualified architects to address community and environmental issues in economically deprived areas in the UK and abroad.

Education Outreach Programmes

The practice is known for its lively and imaginative educational outreach programmes, going out into communities across London to engage with young students. As well as reaching out to schoolchildren who may be considering architecture as a future career, the programmes offer students an opportunity to consider ways in which good design can positively impact on their local communities.

These outreach programmes reinforce the wider practice ethos – that good design creates a sense of pride, ownership and inclusion that ultimately improves people’s lives.
