A Budding Star
By Zhao Handan
Yang Xue, a television sensation on rapid rise into stardom, is winning the heart of fans across the country after appearing in a batch of television hits over the past few years.
Her fans fondly dub her's etite princess? Their mania has never abated a bit even after seeing she portray herself as a spiteful girl.
Recently I had an interview with Yang Xue during the shooting of a historical television series named Zhang Juzheng, a top-ranking Ming Dynasty minister who masterminded and implemented a political reform for a period of ten years (1573-1582).
I met the young star in a hotel room. The walls had posters presenting the stars she admires. On the bed was her dear boyfriend: a tiny teddy bear named Winnie the Pooh, accompanied by a latest Nokia mobile phone and a Cannon digital camera. Inside a cabinet in a corner was a secret storage of her favorite between-meal nibbles. Also in the corner was a pair of badminton rackets and a pipa, which is a traditional Chinese musical instrument.

A Beijing local who grew up in the ambiance of the local culture, Yang Xue has the same signature honesty and a cool sense of humor as characterized by the Beijing residents. Recalling her brief actress career, Yang says that her school years were nothing but average. After she flunked in the annual college entrance examination, her mother enrolled her in an acting performance course at the Beijing Film Academy. Before that, all her acting experience added up to a few appearances in some commercials. Though perfect as a model for the flat media, the 1.69-meter-tall girl was not tall enough for the T-stage. Yang was not a highly motivated student at the course and absented herself from almost all the training sessions. In fact, she somewhat dreaded the acting class and the rumors about the messy and dark downside of the showbiz life sounded very scary to her.
But the showbiz life has turned out all right for her and it is better her expectation. She believes it is because she has luckily met good-hearted people. Her first showbiz role was her appearance in Only You, a television series. She is one part of a triangle romance. The other two stars were highly experienced and encouraged her, strengthening her determination to be a good actress.
In 2003, Yang Xue starred as the heroine in One Million, the only film she has made so far. The film received the best foreign language feature film award at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival in 2004. Yang was not excited. Actually, when the news reached her, she was being lectured by the director for her performance in a television series called Butterfly.
Yang's budding career saw a great leap forward in 2004 when she appeared in four high-profile television series. In Kongfu Brothers, She was a beautiful but spiteful she-devil. Some of her fans were worried that the role might ruin her good-girl image. She rose to the challenge and her brilliant acting convinced the director so much that he augmented her part in the play. The series was widely acknowledged as a breakthrough in her career.
The year 2006 sees Yang play a role as a 16-year-old who falls in love with a 60-year-old court minister in Zhang Juzheng. Some fans abhorred this lopsided love affair. Yet, Yang was attracted to the challenge. She grabbed the chance to broaden and enrich her experience. To portray the girl, Yang declined offers for three other television series. She comments that the role has changed her attitude toward a May-December romance.
No, she says she does not have a boyfriend now. Her dream about Mr. Right is simple: above all, he should be a good man who is reasonable and compassionate so that they can lead a peaceful life. She says that she dislikes a tyrant. She dreams that she wants to love a man whom she can admire.
While enjoying the new fame under spotlight, she prefers a life in simplicity. Her daily routine offstage is no more than writing and watching DVDs as well as enjoying gourmet food. She wishes to become an eminent actress at 30.
