Students from Zhejiang Visit Shizuoka
By Shi Guowen, Wu Gaopan
In the golden October, a group of 33 senior high school students and teachers from East China’s Zhejiang Province paid a one-week visit for academic exchanges to Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. These students and teachers were from Zhejiang Tourism Vocational College, Yiwu Urban and Rural Vocational School, Yiwu Middle School and Shaoxing Central Vocational Education School. This is the second student group of senior high school students and teachers from Zhejiang to Shizuoka prefecture sent by Zhejiang Provincial Chinese People’s Association of Friendship with Foreign Countries.

The delegation toured some of the most famous sightseeing sites in Japan including Disneyland, Ueno-Koen Park in Tokyo, Fuji Mountain, Arashiyama, Kinkakuji, Kiyomizudera in Shizuoka, and Castle Tenshukaku in Osaka. The group was particularly excited by Arashiyama where late premier Zhou Enlai lived for a while in his early years and wrote a short poem entitled “The Hill in the Rain” about the scenery he saw there. The poem is most popular with Chinese students because it is in their textbook.
Students and teachers from Zhejiang divided themselves into two groups and visited Shizuoka Municipal Senior High School and Shizuoka Municipal Commercial School respectively. Students from Yiwu Urban and Rural Vocational School mixed with students at Shizuoka Municipal Commercial School. Together they had a computer-aided design class and a simulation shopping mall accounting management class together. The Chinese students also participated in many off-class activities.

The senior high school students from Zhejiang were put up for two nights with local families. Together Japanese kids and Chinese kids visited local scenic spots and supermarkets. When the young Chinese guests waved goodbye, they could not tear themselves away. They shed tears and so did their Japanese hosts.
The Zhejiang youngsters were impressed with what they experienced in Japan. In particular, they were awed by the cleanness they saw everywhere. They felt that people in Japan were courteous, hospitable, clean, punctual, law-abiding and respectful to the old people.
Since Zhejiang and Shizuoka officially struck up friendly relations in 1982, the two sides have had a lot of exchanges of activities in the field of business, trade, culture, education, sports and others. There have been rich fruits out of this friendly tie. In particular, students from the prefecture visit Zhejiang almost every year. These mutual visits have greatly enhanced the understanding and friendship between the youth of the two countries.
