The daughter of a world-renowned Buddhist studies professor,Uma Thurman spent time in India as a child;started modeling at 15 and landed her first big movie roles before she turned 18,in 1988s Johnny Be Good and Dangerous Liaisons. But it was her Academy Award-nominated performance in 1994s Pulp Fiction that placed her squarely in one-name territory. Thurmans biggest commercial successes followed in 2003 and 2004,when she played a sword-wielding assassin in Quentin Tarantinos Kill Bill films.

Q:How have you juggled your work with being a single mom?

UMA THURMAN:So far,Ive handled it. Aside from premieres and press trips,I havent left New York for a job since I did Kill Bill in 2003. Its really stressful and suffocating,because I do love my work. But as a mother,I cant leave my children. I have to balance their best interests with what keeps us all healthy and happy. Its not easy.

Q:What sort of role would you be tempted to travel for?

UT:Right now my real passion is films that explore the moment were living in,not a period piece. I would love to find a story like Ordinary People,Michael Manns The Insider or Syriana. Not that I get offered any movies like the ones I just mentioned—I wish I did! Recently Ive been getting offered comedies.

Q:Do you see Hollywood changing in terms of offering more good roles for women?

UT:There have always been a few great female movie stars like Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman— women who,because of their skills,success and appeal,fuel the studios to believe in female-driven films. But generally the situation is still not equal between men and women in Hollywood.

Q:How do you feel about what role will be available as you get older?

UT:Well,Im about to find out! I officially passed the mid-thirties mark at the end of April. I do know a lot of my older colleagues feel frustration at not having their due. Someone once said to me, “What we go through is similar to what athletes go through.” And I said,“Actually,thats not quite true. Theoretically,athletes run more slowly as they get older. But actors get better. They may be less attractive—but professionally,they grow richer and deeper.”

Q:Who are some of your Hollywood heroes?

UT:I find it hard to make a list, but if I have to: Meryl Streep,Diane Keaton,Jodie Foster,Katharine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn. Of the new generation I love Reese Witherspoon,Julietter Lewis and Scarlett Johansson. There are tons of incredibly talented kids coming up. Wait, what am I saying—kids? Women.

Q:Do you read your own press?

UT:No,because I get paranoid. Sometimes you can tell a reporter has come in with an opinion already formed: Theyve Googled you,stolen six misquotes from eight pieces and know what theyre going to say. The piece is half-written before youve even begun!If youre not here to try to understand me,whats the point?

Q:Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

UT:Theoretically,I see myself staying in the States. My children need to be near their father. When youre not a family (anymore),you cant have pure freedom— and when youre out of the relationship,agreeing is even harder. But Ill travel again. A teacher friend of mine is taking a year off and traveling around the world with her husband and four children. Its a dream of mine to spend a year on a cultural journey. Im in love with the whole world.
