Common Prosperity and Shared Aspirations
By Yao Zhenfa, Du Xiaoying
On November 16, 2006, Mr. Lee Sei-Kee, president of Korea-China Friendship Association, arrived in Hangzhou. We met him at the hotel two hours after his arrival. Though the interview was brief, Mr. Lee was most cordial and enthusiastic when talking about the friendship between the two countries and his impression of Zhejiang Province.
Mr. Lee came to attend the celebration in memory of the 50th anniversary of the Zhejiang People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and pay a friendly visit to the province. The Korea-China Friendship Association, founded in 1994, champions a correct understanding of China and promotes a correct establishment of cooperative relationship. Lee as president for years has visited China and Zhejiang in particular many times and has met President Hu Jintao.
Lee said during the interview that there has been great progress in the cooperation of two countries in political, economic and cultural fields. Almost all the provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities of China have held “Korean Week” in Korea. In 2006, China sponsored a series of events in Korea to introduce China to Korean people. The year 2007 is the China-Korea Year of Exchange. The two countries will do more to promote people-to-people exchange and cooperation for mutual development.
Xi Jinping, secretary of Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee and chairman of the Standing Committee of Zhejiang Provincial People’s Congress, headed a CPC delegation to visit Korea in July 2005. Led by Liang Pingbo, a delegation of Zhejiang Branch of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries paid a visit to Korea in March, 2006. Lee was deeply impressed with the two visits, which enhanced the mutual understanding of the two countries.
Talking about cultural exchanges between the two countries, Mr. Lee was excited. He said that the “trend of Korea” is a popular phrase in China while in Korea the cultural phenomenon of Chinese things is referred to as the “vogue of China”. Visits and exchanges are numerous. The Korean people respect Chinese culture and are familiar with the works of the Chinese cultural celebrities such as Confucius, Mencius and Lu Xun, which are household names in Korea. The vogue of China is all the rage in Korea and tens of thousands of Korean students now are studying in China.
In July 2005, the Xu Fu Memorial, financed and sponsored by the Association, was founded on Jeju Island. Xu Fu, an envoy sent by the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty (221-207 B.C.) to lead a fleet and seek longevity elixirs in the East Sea. In Korea, Xu Fu is admired as a Chinese talent with profound knowledge in medicine, astrology, and navigation. The envoy from the central empire left many stone carvings in Korea, one of which is on Jeju Island.
At the end of the interview, Mr. Lee said, “Korea and China are friendly neighbors. It is our shared aspiration to promote everlasting peace and common prosperity. Let us join hands to build a world of harmony. The association will make due contribution toward this cause.”
