The History of Valentines Day(情人節的歷史)

February 14 is a day for people who have fallen in love. On this day, these men and women give gifts and cards to each other for Valentines Day.

This day has been popular with people in love for a long time. At first, this holiday was called Lupercalia. Then the name of the day was changed to Saint Valentines Day. The man named Saint Valentine was killed on February 14, 270 A.D., because he was a Christian.

Before Saint Valentine was killed, February 14 was the old Roman holiday, Lupercalia. The church wanted people to think of a Christianholiday on this day, so the church changed the name of the holiday.

This change did not stop people in love from giving gifts to each other. People usually gave gloves, handkerchiefs, or even underwears as gifts. Sometimes people also put hearts and flowers on the present before giving it to the other person.

Valentine cards did not become popular until the 1750s. The first Valentine cards were made by hand. People wrote their own words on the cards. These words were usually kind of funny.

Cards made by machines became more popular around 1850. All of a sudden, Valentines Day became a big holiday for people who made and sold cards.

Now, every year around February 14, cards and chocolates fill stores for people in love.

Mr. Zhang passed the note to Li Lei. “Please go back and show it to Li Ming.”

Ten minutes later, Li Lei came back to the school. He told Mr. Zhang that Li Mings brain cant start. It wont work. It needs to have a rest.

“Please go and bring him here,” said Mr. Zhang. “Tell him all the students of our class are here except him. Ask him to come to school at once. And tell him that I can fix a new programme for his brain. It will start his brain and it will work well. Tell him not to have a chat on the computer for a long time. Whom he talked with on Internet last night was ‘Visitor. You can tell him that my name is ‘Visitor on Internet.”

Li Lei and Li Ming came to school together. When they saw Mr Zhang, Li Ming said sorry to him. And he told Mr Zhang “Little boy” would study hard and catch up with the others.

Mr Zhang laughed. “I believe you. You can become a big boy, I think.”
