故事梗概：夏洛特是一個年輕美麗的大學畢業生，她陪同攝影師丈夫來到東京，卻發現丈夫完全沉浸在工作中，幾乎忽略了她的存在；鮑勃，一個逐漸過氣的好萊塢影星，悲哀而無力地看著風華一點點逝去。東京寂寞的夜空下，兩個失眠的美國人在酒吧里相遇了。或許是眼底那份不自覺外泄的孤獨令這對陌生男女悄然走到一起，他們在絕望中又若有所盼，暗自期待一次奇遇來改變一切……

以下兩段對話，選自夏洛特與鮑勃的兩次相遇。一次是在酒吧里，另一次是在酒店的房間里。對著完全陌生的人，他們卻都敞開了心扉……似乎又找回了生活的信心，繼續回到自己的生活軌跡中去。

A (They first meet at a bar.)

Charlotte: Thank you...Hi. Thanks.

Bartender: ①What can I get you?

Charlotte: Um， I’m not sure.

Bob: For relaxing times， make it... (Bartender， Bob) Suntory time.

Charlotte: Um， I’ll have a vodka tonic. (Laughs) Thanks. So， what are you doing here?

Bob: Uh， a couple of things. Taking a break from my wife， forgetting my son’s birthday， and， uh， getting paid $2 million to endorse a whiskey...when I could be doing a play somewhere.

Charlotte: Oh.

Bob: But the good news is， ②the whiskey works. (Laughs) What are you doing?

Charlotte: Um， my husband’s a photographer， so he’s here working and， uh， I wasn’t doing anything， so I came along. And we have some friends that live here.

Bob: How long have you been married?

Charlotte: (To bartender) Oh， thank you. Mmm. Two years.

Bob: Twenty-five long ones.

Charlotte: Mmm. You’re probably just having a midlife crisis. Did you buy a Porsche yet?

Bob: You know， I was thinking about buying a Porsche.

Charlotte: Twenty-five years. That’s a...Well， it’s impressive.

Bob: Well， you figure you sleep one-third of your life. ③That knocks off eight years of marriage right there. So you’re... you know... down to 16 and change. ④You’re just a teenager at marriage. You can drive it， but there’s still the occasional accident.

Charlotte: Yeah. (Laughs)

Bob: What do you do?

Charlotte: Um...I’m not sure yet， actually. I just graduated last spring.

Bob: What did you study?

Charlotte: Philosophy.

Bob: Yeah， ⑤there’s a good buck in that racket.

Charlotte: (Laughs)Yeah. Well， ⑥so far it’s pro bono.

Bob: (Both chuckle)Well， ⑦I’m sure you’ll figure out the angles.

Charlotte: Yeah. I hope your Porsche works out. Cheers to that， huh?

Bob: Cheers to that. (Japanese) Ganbei!

（他們在酒吧里初次相遇。）

夏洛特：謝謝……你好！謝謝。

酒吧服務員：想喝點什么？

夏洛特：呃，我不知道。

鮑勃：為休閑時光來杯……（酒吧服務員和鮑勃同時說）三得利

時光。

夏洛特：我要一杯伏特加。（笑聲）謝謝！你在這干什么？

鮑勃：幾件事情。離開太太一陣子；拋開兒子的生日；還有，放棄在某處演戲的機會，來給威士忌做廣告，賺兩百萬。

夏洛特：哦。

鮑勃：但好消息是，這威士忌不錯。（笑聲）你在干什么？

夏洛特：我丈夫是攝影師，他來這里工作，我沒事情做就跟來了。我們有一些朋友住在這里。

鮑勃：你們結婚多久了？

夏洛特：（對酒吧服務員說）哦，謝謝！嗯，兩年了。

鮑勃：我25年了。

夏洛特：呃，你大概是遭遇中年危機了。你買了保時捷了嗎？

鮑勃：你別說，我還真想過買一輛保時捷。

夏洛特：25年，好…….呃，令人印象深刻。

鮑勃：哦，睡覺占用了你三分之一的生命，所以應該減去8年婚齡，那么……你知道……就剩下16年左右了，所以在婚姻問題上你還是個新手。你能駕馭它，但有時還是有點小意外。

夏洛特：是的。（笑聲）

鮑勃：你干什么的？

夏洛特：嗯……其實我也不清楚。我去年春天才畢業。

鮑勃：你主修什么？

夏洛特：哲學。

鮑勃：哦，那可是好專業。

夏洛特：（笑聲）是的。到現在還只能做義工。

鮑勃：（一起吃吃地笑）我相信你會找到門路的。

夏洛特：對，我希望你能買到保時捷。為此干杯？

鮑勃：為此干杯！（日語）干杯！

B (They meet at the hotel again.)

Charlotte: You know， the first time I saw you， you were wearing a 1)tuxedo at the bar. You were very dashing. I liked the

2)mascara.

Bob: But the first time I saw you was in the elevator.

Charlotte: Really?

Bob: You don’t remember?

Charlotte: Mmm. I guess you do kind of blend in， huh? (Chuckles) Did I 3)scowl at you?

Bob: No， you smiled.

Charlotte: I did?

Bob: Yes， it was a complete accident. A freak. I haven’t seen it since. Just that one time. Like that， but bigger. Bigger. Yeah， big...big...Well， not that big. (Chuckles)

Charlotte: Why do they switch the “R”s and the “L”s here?

Bob: Oh， for 4)yuks. You know， just to mix it up. They have to amuse themselves. ’Cause we’re not makin’ ’em laugh. (Chuckles)

Charlotte: Let’s never come here again， ’cause it would never be as much fun.

Bob: Whatever you say. ⑨You’re the boss.

Charlotte: I’m stuck. Does it get easier?

Bob: No. Yes. It gets easier.

Charlotte: Oh， yeah? Look at you.

Bob: Thanks. (Chuckles) The more you know who you are， and what you want， the less you let... things upset you.

Charlotte: Yeah. I just don’t know what I’m supposed to be. You know? I tried being a writer， but...I hate what I write. And I tried taking pictures， but they’re so 5)mediocre， you know. Every girl goes through a photography phase. You know， like horses? You know? Take， uh， dumb pictures of your feet.

Bob: You’ll figure that out. I’m not worried about you. Keep writing.

Charlotte: But I’m so 6)mean.

Bob: Mean’s okay.

Charlotte: Yeah? What about marriage? Does that get easier?

Bob: That’s hard. We used to have a lot of fun. Lydia would come with me when I made the movies， and we would laugh about it all. Now she doesn’t want to leave the kids， and...she doesn’t...need me to be there. The kids miss me， but they’re fine. It gets a whole lot more complicated when you have kids.

Charlotte: Yeah. It’s scary.

Bob: It’s the most terrifying day of your life the day the first one is born.

Charlotte: Yeah. Nobody ever tells you that.

Bob: Your life， as you know it， is gone. Never to return. But they learn how to walk， and they learn how to talk， and...and you want to be with them. And they turn out to be the most...delightful people...you will ever meet in your life.

Charlotte: Hmm， that’s nice.

Bob: Where did you grow up?

Charlotte: Um， I grew up in New York， and I moved to Los Angeles when John and I got married. But it’s so different there.

Bob: Yeah， I know.

Charlotte: John thinks I’m so 7)snotty.

Bob: (Chuckles) Hmm. You’re not hopeless.

（他們在酒店里再次見面。）

夏洛特：你知道吧，我第一次見到你是在酒吧里。你穿著禮服，非常華麗，我喜歡那睫毛膏。

鮑勃：但我第一次見到你是在電梯里。

夏洛特：真的？

鮑勃：你不記得了？

夏洛特：嗯。我看你是搞錯了，是嗎？（吃吃地笑）我有瞪著你嗎？

鮑勃：沒有，你笑了。

夏洛特：我有嗎？

鮑勃：對，完全是意外。不正常，我再也沒見過。就那一次，像現在這樣，但笑得更燦爛。再燦爛些，對！再……再……呃，沒那么夸張。（吃吃地笑）

夏洛特：為什么這里的人把“R”讀成“L”？

鮑勃：為了搞笑，只是為了把它們搞混。他們要自娛自樂，因為我們不夠搞笑。（吃吃地笑）

夏洛特：我們以后也不要來這兒了，因為永遠也不會像這次這么好玩。

鮑勃：都聽你的，你說了算。

夏洛特：我很困擾，會好起來嗎？

鮑勃：不，會的。會好起來的。

夏洛特：是嗎？像你一樣。

鮑勃：謝謝！（吃吃地笑）你越了解自己，了解自己要什么，你就越不會被什么所困擾。

夏洛特：對！我只是不知道我應該干什么。你明白嗎？我嘗試寫文章，但我討厭自己寫出來的東西；我也試過拍照，你知道，但拍出來的作品很普通。每個女孩都會經歷玩攝影的階段，比如說，拍馬。或者是拍你的笨腳趾。

鮑勃：你會開竅的，我可不擔心你。繼續寫文

章吧。

夏洛特：但我太平凡了。

鮑勃：平凡也不錯啊。

夏洛特：是嗎？婚姻呢？會好起來嗎？

鮑勃：很難。我們有過歡樂的時光。那時候我拍電影時莉迪亞會跟著一起去，我們過得很愉快。現在她不想離開孩子，而且……她也……不需要我在身旁。孩子們掛念我，但沒有我他們也很好。當你有了孩子以后，生活就復雜多了。

夏洛特：對，很可怕。

鮑勃：第一個孩子出生的日子是你一生中最可怕的一天。

夏洛特：對，但你之前根本不知道。

鮑勃：你的生活，在你察覺以前，就已經完了。一去不返。但他們很快學會走路，學會說話，你很想跟他們在一起。他們變成世界上最令你開心的人。

夏洛特：嗯，好溫馨。

鮑勃：你在哪里長大的？

夏洛特：在紐約，然后我跟約翰結婚后就搬到了洛杉磯。但那里很不一樣。

鮑勃：是的，我明白。

夏洛特：約翰認為我很沒禮貌。

鮑勃：（吃吃地笑）嗯。你還有救。
