III 閱讀(共兩節,滿分40分)

第一節 閱讀理解(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C和D中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。

A

Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be more dirty than their gasoline-powered cousins.

People in California love to talk about “zero-emissions vehicles,” but people in California seem to becluelessabout where electricity comes from. Power plants most all use fire to make it. Aside from the few folks who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators. Generators are fueled by something — usually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something.

In other words, those “zero-emissions” cars are likely coal-burning cars. Its just the coal is burned somewhere else so it looks clean. It is not. Its as if the California Greens are covering their eyes — “If I cant see it, its not happening.” Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But when you take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat — at the generator, through the transmission lines, etc.

A gallon of gas may propel your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas wont get you nearly as far — so electric cars burn more fuel than gas-powered ones. If our electricity came mostly from nukes, or geothermal, or hydro, or solar, or wind, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, we dont use much of those energy sources.

In addition, electric cars batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill. And finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When its a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot.

41. What does “clueless” mean in paragraph 2?

A. The California Greens are covering their eyes.

B. People in California love to talk about zero-emissions vehicles

C. People in California love to have their roofs covered with solar cells

D. People there have no idea that so far electricity mainly comes from burning coal, oil, etc.

42. According to the passage, why the California Greens hold the idea “If I cant see it, its not happening.”?

A. They do not know those clean cars are likely coal-burning cars.

B. They do believe that the coal is burned somewhere else so it looks clean.

C. They tend to hold that electricity is a nice part of energy.

D. They tend to maintain that gasoline is a good way to run a vehicle.

43. The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run __________.

A. not less than 25 miles.

B. more than 25 miles.

C. no less than 25 miles.

D. not more than 25 miles.

44. Compared with cars using gas, electric cars __________

A. do not burn fuel and more environmental.

B. are toxic and it is difficult for nature to clean it up when their batteries are buried in one spot.

C. are very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated

D. are poisonous for a long time and will eventually end up in a landfill.

45. It can be inferred from the passage that __________.

A. Being green is good and should be encouraged in communications

B. Electric cars are not clean in that we get electricity mainly by burning something.

C. Zero-emissions vehicles should be chosen to protect our environment.

D. Electric cars are now the dominant vehicle compared with gasoline-powered cousins.

B

When you close your eyes and try to think of the shape of your own body, what your imagine(or rather, what you feel) is quite different from what you see when you open your eyes and look in the mirror. The image you feel is much more vague than the one you see. If you lie still, it is quite hard to imagine yourself as having any particular size or shape.

When you move, when you feel the weight of your arms and legs and the natural resistance of the objects around you, the “felt” image of yourself starts to become clearer. It is almost as if it were created by your own actions and the feelings they cause.

The image you create for yourself has rather strange proportions: certain parts feel much larger than they look. If you have a hole in one of your teeth for example, if feels enormous, you are often surprised by how small it looks when you inspect it in the mirror.

Although the “felt” image may not have the shapes you see in the mirror, it is much more important. It is the image through which you recognize your physical existence in the world. In spite of its strange proportions, it is all one piece, and since it has a consistence right and left and top and bottom, it allows you to locate new feelings when they occur. It allows you to find your nose in the dark and point to a pain.

If the “felt” image is damaged for any reason—if it cut in half or lost, as it often is after a stroke which wipes out your recognition of one entire side—these tasksbecome almost impossible. What is more, it becomes hard to make sense of ones own visual appearance. If one half of the “felt” image is wiped out or injured, the patient stops recognizing the affected part of his body. It is hard for him to find the location of feelings on that side, although he feels the doctors touch, he locates it as being on the undamaged side.

46. In which of the following situations is your image of yourself most vague?

A. When you look into a mirror.

B. When you are in bed with your eyes closed.

C. When you are standing.

D. When you are walking.

47. When you concentrate on the image of a certain part of your body, that part seems ________.

A. smaller than usual

B. smaller than any other part of the body

C. larger than it really is

D. larger than any other part of the body

48. Why is the “felt” image important?

A. Because it is larger than ones body.

B. Because it is smaller than ones body.

C. Because it replaces all other feelings.

D. Because it provides a useful framework for locating feelings.

49. The underlined phrase “these tasks” in the last paragraph does NOT mean “__________”.

A. locating new feelings

B. cutting the image in half

C. recognizing ones physical existence in the world

D. pointing to ones nose in the dark

50. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Ones real image and felt image

B. Ones felt image is not real

C. The advantages and disadvantages of ones felt image

D. The functions of ones felt image

C

It often happens that a number of applicants with almost identical qualifications and experience all apply for the same position. In their educational background, special skills and work experience, there is little, if anything, to choose between half a dozen candidates. How then does the employer make a choice? Usually on the basis of an interview.

There are many arguments for and against the interview as a selection procedure. The main argument against it is that it results in a wholly subjective decision. As often as not, employers do not choose the best candidate, they choose the candidate who makes a good first impression on them. Some employers, of course, reply to this argument by saying that they have become so experienced in interviewing staff that they are able to make a sound assessment of each candidates likely performance. The main argument in favor of the interview—and it is, perhaps, a good argument—is that an employer is concerned not only with a candidates ability, but with the suitability of his or her personality for the particular work situation. Many employers, for example, will overlook occasional inefficiencies from their secretary provided she has a pleasant personality.

It is perhaps true to say, therefore, that the real purpose of an interview is not to assess the assessable aspects of each candidate but to make a guess at the more intangible things, such as personality, character and social ability. Unfortunately, both for the employers and applicants for jobs, there are many people of great ability who simply do not interview well. There are also, of course, people who interview extremely well, but are later found to be very unsatisfactory employees. Candidates who interview well tend to be quietly confident, but never boastful; direct and straightforward in their questions and answers; cheerful and friendly, but never over-familiar; and sincerely enthusiastic and optimistic. Candidates who interview badly tend to be at either end of the spectrum(范圍;系列) of human behavior. They are either very shy or over-confident. They show either a lack of enthusiasm or an excess of it. They either talk too little or never stop talking. They are either over-polite or rudely abrupt.

59. Marx Philips is a German. Although he is poor in English, he wants to study in Britain.

60. Gary Anderson wants to be a successful businessman in the future. Now he is working hard in order to realize his dream.

第二節 讀寫任務(共1小題,滿分25分)

閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求一篇150字左右的英語短文。

Nowadays, the pressures on schools and teachers are often passed on to students and parents. Students are tested more and assigned more homework. In the past 25 years, homework assignments have risen by 51% according to a 2008 study at the University of Michigan. That is an average of 12 extra hours of homework per week!

Excessive homework often leaves no time for students to have fun or do something for themselves. Many parents spend at least three hours every night going through their childrens work.

However, the governments efforts to cut the home work burden of primary and middle school students have drawn mixed reactions. Ironically, though teachers have been widely criticized for piling on homework, it is sometimes parents who ask for more work for their children! When teachers dont give homework, some parents will go to the school and complain. They want teachers to assign homework every day as a means of making sure teachers do their job and the children have work to do.

基礎寫作:(one possible version)

Dear Peter,

Very glad to know you are 16 years old now. “Happy birthday to you!” would have been offered to you at the party if I had been told earlier. First, Id like to say what your father arranges is right and reasonable. First think about if you NEED anything, like a new cell, digital camera, etc. If you dont need anything, think about what you WANT! Maybe some new clothes, DVDs / CDs, tickets to a concert or a movie, or a little of everything. Whats more, maybe you can even donate a little to a charity you love!

Wish you all the best in your new schooling. Surely, you deserve to succeed.

Yours,

Li Hua

讀寫任務:(one possible version)

Homework

Today, both students and parents are suffering from excessive homework. However, while the government is trying to relieve studentsburden, some parents complain about the small amount of homework and ask for more.

Personally, I dont think the function of homework can be ignored. Homework is a means for teachers to find out whether or not their students understand the lessons. Whats more, practice makes perfect. The more questions they practice, the less painful they feel during exams. To some extent, minimizing the amount of homework may encourage students to be lazy.

However, excessive homework is harmful. Students cannot enjoy their leisure time which is occupied by countless assignments and sometimes they have to copy homework from each other in order to finish it on time. All work and no play make John a dull boy. Students should have more time for leisure activities like reading and sports.

On balance, homework is necessary for students but the amount must not be a burden for students.
