Ｓｉｇｎ Ｙｏｕｒ Ｌｉｆｅ Ａｗａｙ

前情提要:詹姆斯(柯林·法瑞爾飾)是麻省理工學院的高材生，臨近畢業的他正拿著自己發明的遠程入侵系統(在影片的最后，正是他的這個發明，誘使沃爾特露出原形，也成功地解救了自己)四處尋找工作機會。戴爾公司對他表示出了極大興趣，與此同時他也引起了美國中央情報局負責人員招募的沃爾特(阿爾·帕西諾飾)的注意。下面這段對話正是在詹姆斯兼職的酒吧，沃爾特極力游說他加入美國中央情報局。

James: What’d you like?

Walter: I would like to teach you something.

James: Okay. I’m pretty busy right now.

Walter: James， the most important thing you need to know is that you don’t know shit. (Tears the newspaper and then restores it) What you see...what you hear...Nothing...is...what it seems.

James: Drink?

Walter: Martini.

James: Sure.

Walter: That’s how it begins， you know. Call will come in a day or two. His name is John Medica. He’s head of RD for Dell. He’s gonna invite you out for martinis. ①Before long， you’re gonna be working out of Advanced 1)Encrypting in Bethesda. Five years， you’ll get your first annual trip to Texas. James: So you’re a recruiter.

Walter: That I am.

James: You’re kidding.

Walter: Applications for the CIA are up 2)tenfold.

James: Wow. Would I have to kill anyone?

Walter: Would you like to?

Woman: Beer man， Heineken?

James: Yeah， just a sec. All I know about the CIA is that they’re a bunch of fat， old white guys who fell asleep when we needed them most.

Walter: Oh， well， like I said， you don’t know shit.

James: I know what I know.

Walter: Nice meeting you， James.

James: You too.

Walter: Way I figure， you’ll probably go in the oil business...like your daddy.

James: Hey! Hey， hey， hey...Did you know my father?

Walter: James， I have recruited and trained and served with the best our country has to offer for over a quarter of a century. ③I am a 3)scary judge of talent. It’s my gift. I am recruiting you， Mr. Clayton.

James: In case you haven’t noticed， I’m not exactly

CIA material.

Walter: ④You have any idea what CIA material is?

James: It’s not me.

Walter: No? Well， I don’t know. You graduated top of your class at M.I.T.， majored in nonlinear cryptography， ⑤scored off the charts in your undergrad psych

profile test.

James: Those are confidential.

Walter: Yeah， right. You’re 4)agile， 5)athletic， and...

James: And what?

Walter: You grew up overseas-Uzbekistan， Brunei and Venezuela.

James: Yeah， my father worked for Shell awhile.

Walter: Your father died in 1990...in a plane crash in Peru.

James: What’s your point?

Walter: What’s my point? What the hell you think my point is? My name is Walter Burke. My number’s on the sports page. Give me a call. I’ll be here till noon tomorrow.

詹姆斯:你想要點什么?

沃爾特:中央情報局的入職申請比以往多了十倍。

詹姆斯:嗯，我得殺人嗎?

沃爾特:你想殺嗎?

女聲:酒保，來杯喜力啤酒。

詹姆斯:好的，馬上來。據我所知，中情局只是一群滿腦肥腸的白種老家伙，當我們最需要他們的時候他們卻在呼呼大睡。

沃爾特:嗯，就像我說的，你什么都不

詹姆斯:我知道我所知道的。

沃爾特:很高興認識你，詹姆斯。

詹姆斯:我也是。

沃爾特:我想，你大概只能搞搞石油相關的工作，就像你老爸那樣。

before long: used to indicate sth. will soon happen(很快)。例如:
