The potential host cities for the 2016 Olympic Games are continuing their push to the International Olympic Committee.
IOC President Jacques Rogge said on Tuesday that a decision on the host city for the 2016 Games would not be driven by economics, but the sustainable legacy hosting the event would leave. As well, seven sports are looking for inclusion at the Games, but only two will be selected.
Jacques Rogge (IOC President): We want a good warm public and we want also, whenever possible, great success for the home team because it gives a lot of 1)ambience and atmosphere and ultimately I would say it is not economics but leaving a sustainable legacy because when we leave we want this to be a bonus for the city, for the region and the country.
Rogge was speaking at the end of a two-day Executive Board meeting at the International Olympic Committee Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The IOC Executive Board meeting will be followed by the 2016 Candidates City Briefing. Rio de Janeiro, Chicago, Tokyo, and Madrid will all have the chance on Wednesday to show the IOC why they should be chosen to host the 2016 Olympic Games.
The Olympics have never been held in South America and Rio is hoping that will count in its favour as it bids for the 2016 Olympics.
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (Brazilian President): Brazil now is at its best in its history. The country is becoming powerful. The economy is growing strongly, with improved (in) 2)infrastructure and more security. We are also the 2014 World Cup host. We have the ability to host [the] 2016 Games.
Meanwhile, Pat Ryan, the Chairman of the Chicago Olympic Bid Committee would like to make the most of the briefing opportunity to promote his city.
Pat Ryan (Chairman of Chicago 2016 Olympic Bid): It give us an opportunity to get somewhere in the mid-nineties number of IOC members here, to really learn a lot more about Chicago.
And Tokyo believes they have a sound bid that will put the right message across to the IOC.
Dr. Ichiro Kono (Chairman of Tokyo 2016 Olympic Bid Committee): We’d like to ask them that...please look at our plan in detail(s). Our plan is very secure and we have a plan which is very passionate. We can be able to leave the legacy to the next generations.
The final decision on which city will host the 2016 games will be announced in Copenhagen in October.
And another decision to be announced in October is: which two out of seven new sports will be allowed to take part in the 2016 Games.
Earlier on Monday, seven sports including 3)squash, karate, softball, baseball, roller sports, rugby and golf, all gave their presentations to IOC members.
The last time golf was [in] the Olympics was back in 1904.
And baseball and softball have been taken off the schedule and will not be featured in the 2012 London Games.
Rugby is offering its Sevens competitions which is faster and shorter than the traditional 15-man game. As for squash, it has stressed its universality and youth appeal. And roller sports officials say they have offered an exciting concept with several competitions of in-line skating.
