Chen Xiangmei (Mrs. Anna Chennault, born in 1925) is the widow of late World War II aviation hero Lieutenant General Claire Lee Chennault (1893-1958). He is a popular hero in China for the heroic exploits of the Flying Tigers, the American Volunteer Group of pilots and ground crew, who were under his command. Mrs. Anna Chennault helped the presidential campaigns of Nixon in 1960 and 1967. She visited China in 1981 in the capacity of the chairman of Minorities Committee of Republican Party of USA and in 1983 in the capacity of the vice chairman of American President’s Export Committee.
Over decades, she gained the trust of the White House because she helped a number of Republican presidential candidates in elections. U.S. Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan all asked her to take on various informal tasks for them. In particular, she acted as a secret ambassador in the political triangle of USA, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. She is highly respected in three places. Anna Chennault has contributed a great deal to the improvement of relations between China and the USA and to communications across the Taiwan Straits. On January 4, 1981, Deng Xiaoping met with Mrs. Anna Chennault and held a banquet in her honor at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Chen Xiangmei and Claire Lee Chennault visited Hangzhou in October 1947 and later that year they got married in Shanghai. The West Lake witnessed the romance of the two.
So naturally, Zhejiang gave a red carpet reception to her in September, 1999. It was the then 74-year-old lady’s first visit to Hangzhou after a hiatus of 52 years. On the early morning of September 23, 1999, a limousine fleet went to Shanghai to meet her. By 11 o’clock A.M., she had arrived in Hangzhou and checked into the president suite at West Lake Guest House.
In the evening, Zhejiang Provincial Governor Chai Songyue met with Mrs. Chennault and presented her with a silk map of Zhejiang and Dragon Well Tea, both best special products of Hangzhou. Zhu Huizhen, then director of Zhejiang Provincial Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs, gladly engaged Mrs. Chennault as an honorary advisor to Zhejiang Branch of Association for Relations across the Taiwan Strait. Mrs. Anna Chennault gave copies of her new book “The Memoirs of#8239;Anna Chennault--The Spring and Autumn of American Government” to the hosts and improvised a short poem in classical Chinese tradition in appreciation of the warm hospitality she had received in Hangzhou.
At the noon of September 24, the leadership of Hangzhou met with Mrs. Anna Chennault at Xiaoqiao Hotel. The CPC secretary Li Jinming briefed Mrs. Chennault on the modernization progress Hangzhou had made since the reform and opening up. Mrs. Chennault said she had been in Hangzhou more than 50 years before. She was happy to see rapid changes in Hangzhou. She wrote a poem in commemoration of the meeting on the spot.

The gathering was jointly sponsored by Zhejiang International Cultural Exchanges Association, Zhejiang CPPCC Poets, Calligraphers and Painters Association, Zhejiang Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Art Committee of Zhejiang Culture Administration and Louwailou Restaurant. Nearly 100 cultural celebrities of Zhejiang and Hangzhou attended. Hangzhou-based artists created paintings and calligraphic artworks on the spot and presented their creations to Chennault as gifts. Singers, folk music instrumentalists, Yueju opera and Peking Opera artists performed. A group of teenage acrobats staged a breathtaking stunt. Chennault was hugely pleased by the afternoon matinee.
In the evening, Louwailou Restaurant regaled the visitors with a luxurious dinner on a restaurant boat on the lake.
On the morning of September 25, Mrs. Anna Chennault visited Zhejiang University of Technology. After university president Wu Tianzu gave a brief introduction to the university, Chennault asked whether the university offered a course on journalism. She talked about her journalist career and the importance of media and journalism. She offered to set up a journalism award when the journalism course at the university became better. She also said she would help Zhejiang University of Technology to set up academic and cooperative ties with American counterparts.
During her stay in Hangzhou, Mrs. Chennault attended a forum held in her honor, where she met with publishers and journalists of the province. She and the Zhejiang Press and Publishing Administration signed a memo about the establishment of an award for best publications in the province.
She also found time to visit a traditional paper-making and printing business in Fuyang. The books printed and bound there are all made in the ancient Chinese techniques.

On the afternoon of September 25, she visited Lakeview Teahouse where she watched a tea performance and took a panoramic view of the West Lake from a vantage point in the teahouse.
