[記敘文]

One day when some government officials were rebuilding a barn (谷倉), they found a mouse hole in a corner and used smoke to force the mice inside the hole to come out. After a while they indeed saw mice running out, one after another. Then, everyone thought that all the mice had escaped. But just as they began to clean up, they saw two mice squeezing (擠) out at the mouth of the hole. With some efforts, the mice finally got out. However, it was strange that after they came out of the hole, they did not run away immediately. Instead, one chased after the other near the mouth of the hole. It seemed that one was trying to bite (咬) the tail of the other.

Everyone was puzzled, so they stepped nearer to take a look. They realized that one of the mice was blind and could not see anything, and the other was trying to allow the blind mouse to bite on his tail so that he could pull the blind one with him to escape.

After seeing what happened, every-one was speechless and lost in thought. During the meal time, the group of people sat down in a circle and started to chat about what happened to the two mice.

One serious American official said: “I think the relationship between those two mice was that of king and guard.” The others thought for a while and said: “That was why!”

A smart French said: “I think the relation-ship between those two mice was that of husband and wife.” Again the others thought for a while, and all felt it made sense. A Japanese said: “I think the relationship between those two mice was that of mother and son.” Once again the others thought for a while, and felt this was more reasonable. So they expressed agreement another time.

At that moment, one Chinese asked:

“Why did those two mice have to have a certain relationship?” Suddenly, the group looked back at the Chinese and remained speechless. The American official, the French and the Japanese who had spoken earlier all lowered their heads in shame, and did not dare to answer.

In fact, the true love is not built on friendship, loyalty or blood relationship. Instead, it’s based on no relationship.

[議論文]

It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.

Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and mathematics need not be taught in detail (詳細地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all take an interest in the world.

I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.

( )1. People with little education usually ______.

A. spend a long time in school

B. have a good chance to get a job

C. spend the best years to choose

jobs

D. have fewer chances to get a good

job

A. make a man lead a better life

B. teach a man to write and think

C. make people get a way of living

D. teach people to read good books

( )3. The underlined word “well-rounded” in the passage means “______” in Chinese.

A. 圓滿的

B. 嶄新的

C. 公平的

D. 全面的

( )4. It is expected that educated people will be able to ______.

A. accept education as a way of living

B. take an interest in the whole world

C. develop their abilities to make plays

D. learn subjects like language and

math

( )5. The passage mainly tells us that ______.

A. education should make a man

improve

B. people can get education in a short

time

C. people should be able to get better paying jobs

D. all subjects are so important for a

way of living

[說明文]

Frogs are animals that can live both in water and on land. There are more than 5,000 kinds of frogs on the earth. The earliest known frogs lived about 190 million years ago and the frogs today still look the same. Here are some fun things that you might not know about frogs. Enjoy!

The Biggest and the Smallest Frogs

Some frogs can be very big. The biggest kind of frog is the Goliath Frog in West Africa. Its body can be nearly 30cm long, about the size of a large cat. The Gold Frog and the Poison Frog are the smallest frogs in the world. They are less than 1cm long. Though the Poison Frog is very small, it is not weak at all. It is dangerous. Any animal that eats it will die very soon.

The Best Jumpers

Frogs are very good at jumping. They developed jumping legs so that they would not be eaten by other large animals. Using their big strong legs, more frogs can jump over 20 times their own length. It is like a person jumping over about 30.48m. The Australian Rocket Frog can even jump over 2m, which is 50 times its body length (5.5cm). That might be the reason why frogs are called the best jumpers on the earth.

The Cryogenic Animal

Some frogs like the Common Wood Frog have a special ability to live in very cold places. When the temperature goes down, they become ice frogs. 2/3 of their body water freezes. Their hearts stop, and their breathing stops too. You may think they are dead, but in fact they are not. Maybe we humans can learn the way that the frogs do for medical purpose.

( )1. The earliest frogs lived about ______ million years ago.

A. 20 B. 30

C. 50 D. 190

( )2. The Gold Frog is one of the ______ frogs on the earth.

A. smallest

B. biggest

C. strongest

D. weakest

( )3. ______ can jump over 2m.

A. The Goliath Frog

B. The Common Wood Frog

C. The Poison Frog

D. The Australian Rocket Frog

( )4. What will happen to a Common Wood Frog at very low temperature?

A. It will die very soon.

B. It will be an ice frog.

C. It will become dangerous.

D. It will become very small.
