The side-effect of China’s rapid growth is a worrying degradation of its environment. Deforestation has turned a quarter of the country into desert. Blind industrialization and obsession with short-term economic benefits have made air and water seriously polluted.Heavy mist has become a headache to big cities. Diagnoses of respiratory disease are obviously increasing among city residents. Drinking water pollution is afflicting both cities and villages, for example, groundwater in a village in He Bei province turing red and 16,000 dead pigs threatening Shanghai’s drinking water supply.
It is racial suicide to develop economy at the expense of the environment. For the sake of us and our descendants, environmental consciousness must be cultivated and sustainable development must be promoted.
