Passage One
Most dictionaries will tell you a number of things about a language. There are three important things. These three things are spelling, pronunciation and meanings.
First, a dictionary will tell you the spelling of a word. If you are not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in alphabetical order—a,b,c and so on. For example, on a dictionary page the word “poor”—p,o,o,r—comes before “poverty”—p, o, v, e, r, t, y—and the word “poverty” comes before “power”—p, o, w, e, r. The words are always given in an alphabetical order.
The second thing, a dictionary will tell you pronunciation. Most give phonetic, or sound, alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell you how a word is pronounced. There are a few different phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International Phonetic Alphabet to show pronunciation.
The third thing, a dictionary will tell you the meaning of words. You can look up a word and find out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary will tell you all of the word’s meanings. For example, in English the common word “get” has over 20 different meanings.
( ) 1. According to the passage, one of the three important things is how to ___ .
A. use a word
B. make a sentence
C. write a word well
D. read a word correctly
( ) 2. A good dictionary can tell you more of___ .
A. grammar
B. the word’s spelling
C. the word’s meaning
D. the word’s pronunciation
( ) 3. Phonetic alphabets are used to show ___ .
A. spellingB. handwriting
C. meaningsD. pronunciation
Passage Two
I’ve been working in a school for more than twenty years. Many parents often ask me, “How can you teach your child good study skills? How can he or she get the homework done as quickly as possible?” Here are some tips:
1. If the child is as young as nine or ten, ask him or her to prepare a small notebook to write down the homework given by his or her teachers. By developing this habit, he or she will learn to be much more responsible (有責任感的).
2. Find a good place to study. This should be a quiet place that is free from everything but study things. No games, computers, or televisions. Once you have decided on a place to study, this should be the only place where your child does his or her homework and studies. There should also be a very specific time for homework to be done. Usually, homework should be done as soon as the child gets home from school. This also goes for the kids who take part in after-school activities. Of course, it is a good idea to allow the child to have a healthy snack before the work begins.
3. Also remember that it is the child’s duty to do his or her homework. Some children give up easily and go to Mom and Dad for help when they have a problem. Try to let them solve it first. By doing this, they will get a sense of success from overcoming problems. In this way we help them to help themselves.
( ) 1. Why do the writer ask kids to keep a notebook?
A. To help them to learn more.
B. To help them to remember more.
C. To make them more responsible.
D. To make them more interested in studying.
( ) 2. The place where the children study must ___ .
A. be free from everything
B. be big, clean and tidy
C. have a TV set and a computer
D. be quiet, bright and free from things for entertainment
( ) 3. What does the underlined word mean?
A. Forgetting.B. Leaving.
C. Discussing.D. Solving.
( ) 4. What should the children do when they have trouble with their homework?
A. Ask for parents’ help.
B. Ask for teachers’ help.
C. Put it away and have a snack.
D. Try to solve the problems by themselves.
