閱讀理解

Passage One

In 1826, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera. He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo.

The next important date in the history of photography (攝影術(shù)) was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. In his picture you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest thing. This kind of photo was called a Daguerre’s type.

Soon, other people began to use Daguerre’s way.Travellers brought back wonderful photos from all around the world. People took pictures of famous buildings, cities and mountains.

In about 1840, photography was developed. Then photographers could take pictures of people and moving things. That was not simple. The photographers had to carry a lot of films and other machines. But this did not stop them, for example, some in the United States worked so hard.

Mathew Brady was a famous American photographer. He took many pictures of great people. The pictures were unusual because they were very lifelike. Photography also became one kind of art by the end of the 19th century. Some photos were not just copies of the real world. They showed feelings and ideas, like other kinds of art.

Passage Two

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence and feelings.

In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. People in these states have more heart trouble when the weather changes in February or March.

The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, the IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have higher intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools in the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).

Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather, too. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.

Low air pressure may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days.

Are you feeling sad, tired, or forgetful today? It may be the weather’s problem.

( ) 1. What can cause health problems?

A. Hot and wet weather.B. Strong wind.

C. Warm weather.D. Low air pressure.

( ) 2. A report shows that people may have higher intelligence when there comes ___ .

A. rainB. a strong wind

C. hot weatherD. low air pressure

( ) 3. The writer wants to tell us that ___ .

A. bad weather influences all people in the same way

B. weather influences people’s hearings

C. the IQ changes when weather changes

D. people feel good on low-pressure days

( ) 4. Which is the best title for this passage?

A. Hot Weather Causes Health Problems

B. Different Weather Makes People Feel Bad

C. Weather Influences Feelings

D. Weather Influences Health, Intelligence and Feelings
