(Soundbite of the Disney movie) Host: And they lived happily ever after. Or did they? What happens to the Disney princesses after the movie ends? Well, one photographer has taken a funny, if dark, look at how life isn’t always “happily ever after”, and we should tell you this is only one woman’s 1)interpretation. Kids, this does not mean that princesses are not for real or don’t live happily ever after. And now, I spoke to the woman who created these shots, Dana Goldstein, a little earlier today.
Dana, thanks for coming on the show. I always wondered what happened afterwards, and you’ve sorted it out for us. How did you come up with this idea? Dana Goldstein (photographer): Thanks. Well, in 2007 I shot my first picture. It was Cinderella. The whole 2)series was inspired when my mother…when my mother was 3)diagnosed with cancer, and, at the same time, my 3-yearold was 4)fascinated with Disney princesses and it [sic] really into the culture. And the two events kind of came together, and I began to think, what if these princesses had to deal with real-life challenges, with reality. And so I came up with, Rapunzel was my first idea, but actually ended up 5)shooting Cinderella first.
Host: Well, let’s talk about Snow White first. What ever happened to Snow White?
Dana: In my story, what happens is that they have lost their 6)kingdom, and they lost all of their domestic help, so now she’s living the 7)suburban life and a bit 8)overwhelmed. Her prince has, you know, due to the economy, has lost his job, and he’s kind of sitting around the house a little depressed, and, you know, this is really the sign of the times, and you’ll see this a lot. Host: What about Cinderella?
Dana: Okay. So, in my story, Cinderella—so I created 9)backstories for all of them, and in my story Cinderella has been trying to 10)conceive after she got married. She had the perfect wedding, they’ve been trying to conceive, and it didn’t really work out for her. After several attempts at 11)invitro, she finds herself unable to conceive, a n d t h e r e f o r e she goes into this depression and starts drinking, starts to look for these old dive bars, where nobody will recognize her.
Host: Oh-h-h-h. Now I would really like somebody to live happily ever after…
Dana: (laughs)
Host: What happened to Red Riding Hood? Tell me she had a good time.

Dana: Well, she did. Well, as you can see, Red Riding Hood is on her way to see her grandmother, and, in my 12)scenario, I always saw her as a person who always took care of everybody else and never took care of herself, and, therefore, kind of let herself go. And, on the other hand, you see that she’s carrying a basket of fast food, and with this I’m speaking to the fast-food society, fast-food nation that we’ve created, and, you know, the lack of time that we all have, that we really depend on these types of restaurants to feed us. It’s unfortunate that good food is also very expensive today.
Host: Oh, Dana, it’s so depressing! What are you doing to us?
Dana: (laughing)
Host: How does your daughter feel about this?
Dana: Well, my daughters love the work. I mean, they recognize their favorite characters, and that’s really as far as it goes. They’re not 13)sophisticated enough to grasp the whole message. Eventually they will be, but, you know, I don’t think I’m[sic] ruined their whole fantasy world. I’m just a 14)realist, and I like to raise them with realistic attitudes, and I like for their eyes to be open from a very young age, so they’re prepared, when they get older, they’re prepared for what real life really has to offer and the challenges that we face in life.
Host: Now, do any of these princesses go on to become a president or, you know, be successful and happy in their lives?
Dana: I don’t know. You know, they could. (laughs) We don’t know how the story continues.
Host: Oh, well, we look forward to the next 15)installment, and we’ve had a lot of fun with it. Thanks very much Dana. Dana: Thank you so much. Goodbye, Australia.
