Write down your birth date. Next, note down the birth date of one of your grandparents. Then do some 1)historical research. Try to find out what happened on those two days in history. Maybe you can 2)get access to a newspaper from those time periods by looking on the web or going to your library or local 3)archives. If you can’t get access to those, then just ask your elders. Try to find out what happened, not just in your own home area but also in at least two countries that are far away from your own—what political 4)conflicts, what wars were happening, for example, what were people thinking about, what were they worrying about, were there new inventions, technological breakthroughs, can you figure out how people spent their time. It should be fun and 5)intriguing to do this research, but your goal would also be to use the past, and thinking about historical change, to 6)wrestle with 7)timeless human questions, like how did we become who we are, how can we win freedom, and how can we face the future with creativity and 8)resilience.
