高層建筑的樓層通常是通過圍繞軸線盤旋上升的樓梯相連，但這里的情況則完全不同。三條樓梯形成陡峭的小路，穿行于整幢建筑，緊急樓梯井里的開放式樓梯上下運行。這垂懸式的樓梯連接所有敞式辦公室的工作區(qū)。在這棟14層高的建筑里，用戶可以隨意選擇任何樓梯去往各個樓層。因此，辦公室獨特的開放式景觀將所有樓層的所有工作區(qū)域融為一體。在此景觀之中，承重軸心既是連接的元素，又有著與眾不同的特點。軸心逐漸挪移，樓面布局也不斷顯現(xiàn)。軸心的放置與組合在每一層都會有變化，反過來又導(dǎo)向另一個空間布局。非常樸素、經(jīng)濟(jì)的手法卻生成多樣、寬敞的空間，無須使用任何示意性特征，即可給人別具一格之感。

坐落于蘇黎世湖畔的瑞士再保險公司的新總部，面朝老城區(qū)。處于瑞士再保險公司相互獨立的新巴洛克風(fēng)格的建筑群中，該棟建筑有些鶴立雞群。在這座歷史古城的盡頭，建筑群連接了城市密集街區(qū)與相鄰的公園綠地。

由于立面全是玻璃結(jié)構(gòu)，從遠(yuǎn)處便可看到建筑內(nèi)富有表現(xiàn)力的承重結(jié)構(gòu)。頂層的混凝土承重軸心與外墻齊平。直徑15厘米的實心鋼制電纜支撐著懸臂式的樓面。因此，人們從工作場所便可眺望蘇黎世湖與瑞士阿爾卑斯山脈。湖光山色一覽無余。

The floors of tall buildings are ordinarily connected by flights of stairs that revolve on their own axis. Here, in contrast, three staircases form steep paths that run through the entire building. Open staircases climb up and down on the shafts of the emergency stairs. These cascading staircases link all the work areas of the open plan offices. Users can choose which flight of stairs to take from one storey to another in the 14-storey building. The result is a single, open landscape of offices that brings together all the workplaces on all the floors. In this landscape, the load-bearing cores are both linking and distinguishing elements. The gradually shifting cores allow for a continually developing floorplan. The placement and combination of the cores are modified on each floor, leading, in turn, to a different spatial layout. Diversity and spaciousness have been generated with great economy and simplicity of means, creating a distinctive impression without the use of any gestural features.

The new SwissRe headquarters on the shores of Lake Zürich look out onto the city’s old town. The slightly elevated building stands alone next to SwissRe’s likewise freestanding, neobaroque premises. At the end of the historical old town, the buildings mark the transition between the dense blocks of the city and the adjacent parks and green spaces.

The expressive loadbearing structure inside the building can be seen from a distance since the fa?ade is completely glazed. On the top floor the loadbearing concrete cores are flush with the fa?ade. Solid steel cables, 15 cm in diameter, brace the cantilevered floors, giving the workplaces an unobstructed view of the lake and the Swiss Alps in the background.
