Laitan Ancient Town: the fi rst-batch of famous historical and cultural town in China

Laitan Ancient Town is situated in the Laitan town that is 28 kilometers far away from northern Hechuan District, and with mountains and rivers surrounding, the landscape is beautiful and it has a long history and flourishing culture. It is the first-batch famous historical and cultural town in China, major historical and cultural site protected at the

national level, national 4A level scenic spot, and the most beautiful town in China. In 2013, as one of the 8 ancient towns, it was selected to be the special service stamp of Ancient Town of China and praised as national calling card.

Laitan was built in Song Dynasty, and with sheer cliffs and steep mountains surrounding its three sides, it is a strategic place with feature of “one man can hold back all of the enemy forces”. The whole ancient town integrates ancient streets, ancient Buddha with ancient urns, which is a typical cottage pattern of town. In the ancient town, the small tile-roofed houses of Ming and Qing Dynasty are strewn at random discretion; the stone street alley that is in proper dimension looks primitive and elegant; the Wenchang Palace that was built in Qing Dynasty is well-reserved, and the woodcut relief outside the ancient playhouse is amazing. The barbican that was restructures in the fi rst year of Tongzhi of Qing Dynasty is the only one in Chongqing, and it has the function to hit a dog closing door, and catch a rat in the hole. In the ancient town, there is also Huilong Temple, Zhangye Temple and other sites, and the beautiful legend of 9 palaces with 18 temples.
