Dear Readers,
What comes to mind when you think of brick?Often, people's very first association is with the word "traditional".
As brick has played an important role in almost all the world's cultures, this is hardly surprising. Bricks form a part of our collective consciousness and our history. The evidence for this ranges from individual historic buildings, architectural symbols and monuments to entire cities.
Burnt clay, however, is not just one of the oldest and most durable building materials; it's also among the most modern and forward-looking ones. Natural brick has evolved into a technologically highly advanced building material that offers both resource and energy efficiency. For all of its advances, though, brick has not lost its distinctive characteristics: its architectural functionality, its versatility and its unique ability to shape a healthy and individual living environment.
Many extraordinary, ground-breaking architectural projects happening all over the world attest to this.
Our strong desire to showcase and honour some of these outstanding projects led us to launch the Wienerberger Brick Award in 2004. The strong positive feedback we have received is a confirmation of our efforts. In previous years, the only people eligible to nominate brick architecture for inclusion in the competition were architectural critics and journalists – but, for Brick Award 2016, we have decided to go a step further and let architects put forward their own projects as well. The reaction has been overwhelming: where 300 contestants applied for the Brick Award 2014, this year saw 600 projects nominated from all over the world – a record number.
That did not make the work of our four-member panel of experts any easier. The goal they had set for themselves, after all, was to judge architectural quality not just on the basis of aesthetic criteria, but to take a holistic approach. That meant assessing the interplay of expression, innovation and concept of use – an approach that assures that the architectural projects of this year's winners are particularly noteworthy.
This year three extraordinary projects from China made it into our book Brick 16, presenting the 50 best projects: Wang-House in Chunxiao by Anonymous Architects & Workshop (please see the 2015 March issue of World Architecture), A Courtyard Community in Zhongshan by Atelier Groundwork Architecture (please see also the 2015 March issue of World Architecture) and Song Feng Cui in Wuyuan, by Imagine Architects (please see page 86 ). They illustrate how customized architecture concepts can create unique and forward-looking projects.
I would like to invite all the creative architectural minds from China, who are constantly placing brick in a new context, to submit their projects for the next Wienerberger Brick Award 2018. Submission starts online at the beginning of 2017 (www.brickaward.com).
