Heart transplant surgery is a common medical treatment in the United States. Nationwide, about 4,000 new patients a year are listed for a heart transplant. But only about 2,500 are able to have the operation.
Jason Smith is a surgeon who is skilled at the heart transplant. He notes that because of the inequality in numbers, not all patients on the transplant list will live.“Because of disparity,we still have about 17 percent of patients who get listed for heart transplant and die on the waiting list.”
There is a shortage of organ donors. Some people do not want to donate their organs or their loved ones. Besides, some donated organs do not make it to the surgery room in the right condition for transplant. Once the organ is removed from the donor, there is only a short time to get the organ to the person who needs it. The average length is four to six hours. After that, the organ begins to fail.
Traditionally, the donated hearts are transported in an ice box. Keeping the organ on ice has been the best way to preserve it. Medical workers sometimes carry the box on a helicopter or airplane.
Now,a new travel box contains equipment that keeps the heart beating during transport. The only time it stops beating is for a few minutes—just before it is placed into the chest of the person receiving it.
As to the addition of transport pumps on the boxes,Dr. Jason Smith added,“Having a transport pump to preserve the heart function allows us to better match the hearts to the patients so that more hearts that are being donated can actually be used and implanted into patients.”
25. The underlined word“disparity”in Paragraph 1 means.

A. It needs less medical workers.

Phillis Wheatley was born in Africa in 1753 and died in Boston in 1784. When she was 7 or 8,she was sold as a slave to John and Susanna Wheatley of Boston. She was named after the ship that brought her to America,The Phillis. The family guessed the girl to be about seven years old from her missing front teeth.
Phillis was very intelligent. The Wheatley family taught her to read and write, and encouraged her to write poetry. Her first poem On Messrs,Hussey and Coffin was published when she was only twelve. When she was eighteen,Phillis and Mrs. Wheatley tried to sellacollectioncontainingtwenty-eightofPhillis’poems. Colonists(殖民者)did not want to buy poetry written by an African. Phillis was the first African American and the first slave in the United States to publish a book. She was the first African American woman to earn a living from her writing. China successfully launched its first quantum(量子)satellite in the early hours of Tuesday morning, which will be watched closely by security agencies worldwidely. The launch puts Beijing ahead of its global challengers in achieving cyber security:a digital communication system inaccessible to hackers.
By launching a group of quantum satellites,China hopes to create a super secure network that uses an encryption(加密)technique based on a field called quantum communication. This new way can be effective in a city or at most between two nearby cities. While traditional forms of encryption rely on mathematical functions that are very difficult to be changed, scientists have established a better way to send secret data.“We have created some quantum techniques that rely on the law of physics rather than the mathematics.”
In the case of the 600kg Chinese satellite launched,a crystal(晶體)at the center of the spacecraft will produce pairs of entangled photons(糾纏光子),which will be used like a laser beam carrying quantum information. Then the receivers and the senders on the ground will make some security rules. Once in the orbit the satellite will send pairs of the entangled photons to bases on the ground to create a secret key used to access the carried information. It can’t be hacked because the information carried in the quantum state cannot be cloned without destroying the informationitself.
While other space agencies have been experimenting with the technology, none has got the level of financial support provided by Chinese government. But if all goes according to the plan,China will follow Tuesday’s launch with more quantum satellites.
33. China’s first quantum satellite.
A. develops an interest of some security agencies
B. builds China’s leading role in network security
C. stops people getting into the communication system
D. helps improve the communication with other countries
34. How does the quantum satellite work?
A. The satellite will create entangled photons to spread information.
B. The receivers can use a secret key to get the carried information.
C. The senders will send information through a laser beam.
D. The bases will receive a crystal from the spacecraft.
35. Where does the text probably come from?
A. A news review.
B. A science fiction.
C. An official announcement.
D. A science report.

Without hesitation,I dialed“911”and informed the emergency staff of his ill. It wasn’t long after an ambulance arrived. One roommate brought a blanket for him;others supported him into an ambulance. Dear Michael,
I am so grateful for your warm reception during my stay in your family. But I’m terribly sorry to bother you for doing me a favor.
To catch the early flight in the morning,I was in such a hurry that I left a series of original English novels,Harry Potter,in your study. It is very important to me because it is a gift that I plan to send to my best friend in China. Now I beg you to mail it back to my school in China at your convenience. I would appreciate it if you can do it for me.
Thank you again and look forward to your earliest reply.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
