Architecture in the Fight for Life
The Social Pavilion is part of the projects foreseen in the Paraisópolis Master Plan 2010-2025 designed by the team of architects for the Municipality of S?o Paulo.
The initial objective of the project was to relocate some educational and social programmes whose headquarters had to be removed because of infrastructure works or because they are in areas at risk.
After a few years without meeting the originally planned use, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic caused the population of the favela (around 100,000 inhabitants) to organise themselves to take the necessary measures due to the inaction of the national government.
In this new scenario, the Pavilion has become a fundamental piece.

Due to its condition as a covered space, but open and well ventilated, the Pavilion managed to gather all the activities to fight the pandemic.
In it, health training classes were organised by community leaders to clarify the measures to be taken by the population to deal with the COVID-19; a kitchen was set up to prepare quality food to distribute to the most vulnerable population who had lost their jobs in the process of social isolation; a facial mask-making workshop was set up to donate to the neediest residents.
Today, with the situation quite more controlled, the Pavilion also assumed a cultural role. Its central space is home to art and photography exhibitions; on the mezzanine, Paraisópolis ballet body rehearsals were resumed. A beautiful metaphor for the rebirth of life.
Note: The average mortality rate in the municipality of S?o Paulo is 56.2 people per 100,000 inhabitants; in the case of Paraisópolis, due the community organisation, the rate is 21.7, demonstrating the successful control strategy. (Source: Instituto Polis, May 2020)
