The night I arrived at the USTC’s west campus was mid-February 2019,with a starry sky and a mild temperature. It was dark, and everything was a sleeping beauty around me,trees, streets, and the lake near the apartment that would have been my temporary home for a few months. The lake was close to home, and it quickly became one of the places where I spent many of the quiet moments on campus.
I’d known the group of physicists at USTC who worked on the ATLAS experiment at CERN,European Centre for Nuclear Research, for quite some time. They are fantastic, dependable and dedicated coworkers. In the summer of 2018,a coffee time at the canteen of CERN with Professor Zhengguo Zhao marked the beginning of a new adventure in China, almost opposite to the one where I had spent most of my professional life,Europe,CERN.The idea for the particle physics course at USTC flashed through my mind. But I was confident I could not miss it since the idea came out the flrst moment.
The night I arrived at the airport of Hefei, there was a car waiting for me,and the driver was accompanied by Xiangyu, one of the Ph.D.students who would have been one of the major supporters of my life at USTC.I was exhausted after a nearly one-day flight, but my curiosity about this new world overweighted my exhaustion. They drove me home, and when we arrived on the seventh floor of the building, and I opened the door,I immediately felt at ease.A lovely home,spacious,well-decorated,and well-equipped.With the heating equipment,I felt warm in the cold winter. From the height of my apartment,a small balcony provided me with my flrst view of Hefei.I was on the north side of the campus and below me were trees, gardens, small lakes, and tall buildings on the outskirts of campus.
I taught “Collider Physics” course, which was essentially an “Introduction to Particle Physics”,focusing on measurements/physics at that type of accelerator.I co-taught the course with Haiping Peng, another professor at USTC,and my part lasted for three months, from just after the end of the year holidays to the end of May.I had a class of about 25 students and two lectures per week, one on Monday for about two hours and a quarter, and another on Friday for about one hour and a half. One of my main responsibilities at USTC was preparing the lectures.Having a long lecture on Monday and a shorter one on Friday allowed me to keep up with my research activity during the week but forced me to spend some of the weekends flnalising the slides. The Lecture Hall was located on the fifth floor of “The Fifth Teaching Building”,a modern structure fllled with lecture halls and of students. The equipment for projecting slides was flawless. There was never a problem,a large screen, the acoustics of the hall were excellent, and I could speak without shouting during my lectures.

Antonio Baroncelli (Italian). He is an international visiting professor at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and the editor of Analysis. He graduated from Sapienza University of Rome in 1972 and his research interests include particle and nuclear physics. He was previously the Director of the European Centre for Nuclear Research and since 2019 he worked in the A Toroidal LHC Apparatus (ATLAS) research group of USTC’s Department of Modern Physics, where he taught and conducted scientiflc research.
The USTC campus was a wonderful place to be.Gardens, small artiflcial lakes, and avenues were lined with young students, numerous bicycles, and numerous electric motorbikes. The campus was completely open, and often, citizens of Hefei pass by the gardens and small parks to spend some time in a peaceful situation.
A few shops-fruit and vegetable stores,a mini supermarket,a barbershop, and a laundry-can also be found there, frequented mainly by students and faculty.I discovered two or three fruit shops that were very interesting. The peeled season fruit is sold there. Many people buy peeled and cut sugarcane, walking around and enjoying the refreshing fruit.
The campus has several canteens.A canteen reserved for faculties was the one I used to go to.There is a long table with an impressive selection of vegetables, meat, and flsh,as well as a large offer of soups and Chinese cakes. The system works like a buffet mechanism. You can pay in a minimal sum at the door, and can take whatever you want, and as many times as you want.In the canteen, there were two large halls reserved for faculty.I always used the one with larger windows and more light.
There are also other canteens on campus generally and they are more used by students. There the system is different, and there are many cooking points serving specialized food. The problem was that there you had to know what you wanted ahead of time.In addition, you must also be able to say it in Chinese.A few times I went with students, and I enjoyed delicious food with their advice and help. But,to be honest,I went to the faculty canteen at the majority of the time. There I frequently met colleagues from the Department of Modern Physics and several times also some other western colleagues whom I met on the streets of the campus.
Another thing that distinguishes the campus is the coffee shop,USTC1958,and the eastern assembly hall.
Opened not long ago,the coffee shop has quickly become an iconic meeting place. There you can enjoy a good cup of coffee and a good selection of western cakes. When the weather is flne, the clerk will put tables and chairs outside the coffee shop.Next to the coffee shop,it is a very nice garden. And under the trees,it is always full of people having drinks, talking in a relaxed environment and a lot of people staying there to work.Several coworkers used to start the day in front of a cup of coffee, including myself, and take some time to check E-mail.
The assembly hall is another important and magniflcent structure.Every second week,USTC organizes events in the beautiful large modern hall located on the east of a large square in the center of campus, about 100 meters from the building of Department of Modern Physics. While at USTC,I have attended a few events, including dance and singing performances and orchestra concerts. Some of these performances were western or inspired by western culture. But it was the traditional Chinese cultural spectacles, mostly music, that piqued my interest. The very large hall with a very good acoustic was always full of people. Some of these people are students, and the vast majority are Hefei citizens. What impressed me was that the seats around me had never been vacant.
Numerous things impressed me in China, and I am still working on elaborating on them. But what surprised me the most in China was the discovery of a community built by one united people. Many women and men,the simple and the professor, the technician and the policeman, all contribute with what they have to offer. They all have one goal in common and they are all working on a new social project, which vividly interprets the positive and progressive spirit.
