In 1997, the studio won the open competition to restore the Santa Caterina market located in the historic center of Barcelona.
The proposal aims to take advantage of the extreme complexity of the environment to create a project where commercial use is complemented by residential use and public spaces that connect all the neighborhood’s activities.
The project preserves parts of the existing structure and proposes creating a new image that respects the history and context of the site. The new constructions are superimposed on the existing architecture, blending, merging, and ultimately rising as a conglomerate, a useful and contemporary hybrid that allows the building's trajectory to be perceived.
The interior layout of the market has been reorganized; there are fewer stalls, the access and service systems have been streamlined, and the public spaces have expanded, linking Francesc Cambó Avenue, an important artery of the neighborhood, with the interior of the district, surrounded by a dense network of narrow streets.
