Early on February 6, 2023, a big earthquake (地震) hit Türkiye. A few hours later, a second one came. Buildings fell down and thousands of people died. Soon, the whole world came to help and China was among the first. Hundreds of Chinese people headed there quickly including a Blue Sky Rescue team of 10 volunteers from Zhejiang Province.

The team arrived on February 9 and kept working until February 14. Zhang Saixiao was one of the members. For 20 hours in very cold temperatures, Zhang and her team searched for missing people in the city of Malatya. When they found survivors (幸存者), they spent hours digging and moving away debris to save them.

The year 2008, when the Wenchuan earthquake in the southwestern Sichuan Province killed nearly 70,000 people, is considered as the “first year” for the development of civil charity (民間慈善機構) in China. Since then, many rescue teams have been organized. They have saved a lot of people’s lives during emergencies like the Ya’an earthquake in 2013, the Henan floods in 2021, and the Sichuan mountain fires in 2022.

Before they came back, a shopkeeper at the airport showed a translated message to Chinese volunteers, which reads, “Welcome to our country. May God bless you.” For Chinese volunteers, the experience is something they will remember forever.

Su Mingjuan was born to a poor family in Jinzhai, Anhui. When she was in primary school, her classroom only had paper-covered windows full of holes. Her life changed because of Project Hope.
