By any standard, Dr Seuss’ Oh, The Places You’ll Go! is a great book. And Martin is hardly the first parent to buy the book for his graduating high-schooler. But Martin did something special—he added to the book’s pages 13 years’ worth of hand-written teachers’ comments and impressions about his daughter, Brenna.

When Martin first told Brenna, 18, that he had a present for her, Brenna thought she was getting some graduation card. But then she opened the book and realized that it was filled with personal memories. “Every year, for the past 13 years, since the day you started kindergarten (幼兒園) I’ve gotten every teacher to write something about you inside this book,” he told her. Brenna’s eyes were filled with hot tears.

She described her happiness at her graduation gift online, “He managed to keep this book a secret for 13 years, and surely everyone else in my life knew about it! I was moved to tears. Sitting there reading through this book there are encouraging and sweet words from every teacher I love and remember through my years in this small town. My early teachers mention my ‘laughs’ while my high school teachers mention my ‘smart’. But they all mention my humor and love for life. It is astounding to receive something this touching and thoughtful. I can’t express how much I love my dad for this labor of love.”

Millions of people have checked out Brenna’s Internet message on her father’s gift, which has been considered “unbelievable” and the “best graduation gift ever”. It sure beats a bunch of roses.

24. What did Brenna find when she opened the book?

A. An unusual graduation card. B. A picture of beautiful roses.

C. Her teachers’ words about her. D. Her parents’ personal memories.

25. What is the teachers’ common impression of Brenna?

A. Clever. B. Humorous. C. Thoughtful. D. Hardworking.

26. What does the underlined word “astounding” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. Amazing. B. Important. C. Impossible. D. Helpful.

27. What can be the best title for the text?

A. A Family Full of Love B. Daughter’s Thanks to Dad

C. A Great Book by Dr Seuss D. Dad’s Secret Graduation Gift

Many people believe that you lose the ability to learn new languages as you get older. Language experts, however, will tell you that you’re never too old to learn a new language. As you get older, it can be more difficult to learn a new language, though.

Children and adults learn new languages in different ways. For children, language is their life. They study for thousands of hours every year, because they need to learn languages to become part of their communities. Adults, on the other hand, are already part of a language community. Learning a new language means becoming part of another language community, and adults rarely get the chance to practice as much as young children do.

Moreover, children learning a new language are expected to make mistakes. This gives them freedom when learning to be daring and confident. Adults, however, often feel pressured to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language.

When young children learn a new language, they come to see various languages as a “normal” part of society. This mindset (思維模式) helps them embrace learning a new language without feeling like they’re doing something unusual or “too hard”.

So if you want to learn a new language, go for it! It’s never too late to learn a new language. If you’re older, it may take more work, but it can be done. If you’re a young child, though, now is the time to step out and learn a new language!

28. By “language is their life”, the author means that children .

A. live happily by learning a language B. tend to learn more languages

C. practice a new language a lot D. learn languages in a better atmosphere

29. What may make it hard for the old people to learn a new language?

A. They are afraid of being imperfect. B. They have many interests.

C. They pay little attention to mistakes. D. They make mistakes easily.

30. What makes the difference between children and adults in learning a new language?

A. Their attitudes. B. Their behaviors.

C. Their future plans. D. Their learning materials.

31. What helps children learn a new language more easily?

A. They take it seriously. B. They practice it very often.

C. They regard it as an unusual tool. D. They view it as normal as possible.

D

Felix Ruppert and Alexander Badri-Sprowitz at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart, Germany, designed a half-metre-high robot called Morti and gave it the ability to teach itself how to walk, rather than to perform a pre-programmed step. The four-legged robot took only an hour to learn how to walk steadily, roughly the same amount of time as newborn horses need. And it’s the first time that a machine learning technique has been so successfully applied to four-legged robots.

Morti is controlled by an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm (算法) that doesn’t have much information about the robot’s legs, such as the exact shape of each element. “The AI, working like the central nervous system, gives walking instructions for Morti to follow. It then adjusts them based on readings from foot sensors (傳感器) that signal when the robot falls and loses contact with the ground. At first, Morti falls down, but after about an hour the AI finds the best way to make it walk,” said Ruppert.

Because the AI learns rather than computing details of each leg’s movement in advance, which can use a lot of energy, Morti walks using 42 percent less energy than when it first starts at the end of an hour-long learning process. Morti’s process copies the way baby animals learn to move, as they also find the most efficient way to use their muscles (肌肉) by trying and initially tripping.

Dhireesha Kudithipudi at The University of Texas at San Antonio said that AI robots can often learn a specific task very well but can’t readjust when the environment changes and that Morti’s design, which depends on continually adjusting the robot’s movements, may perform better in that regard. Ruppert said he and the team are working on adding more sensors and range of motion to Morti to make it a more animal-like robot.

32. What is special about Morti?

A. It is pre-programmed to walk. B. It can help teach the newborns.

C. It is the first four-legged robot. D. It can learn to walk by itself.

33. What do Ruppert’s words mainly tell us about Morti in Paragraph 2?

A. Its body structure. B. Its design method. C. Its learning process. D. Its working conditions.

34. How does the AI’s learning ability benefit Morti?

A. By predicting its leg movements. B. By training its muscles to the best.

C. By lowering its energy consumption. D. By strengthening its connection with others.

35. What is Dhireesha Kudithipudi’s attitude toward Morti?

A. Doubtful. B. Concerned. C. Negative. D. Positive.

For so many walkers, the adventure literally starts from their doorstep. As a new walker, maybe you are wondering where to go, how to design your own walk, and who you should go to for advice. 36 Here are a few tips to get you started.

Ask around.

Neighbours, dog walkers, shopkeepers—you’d be surprised at how many people enjoy answering the question “Do you know any nice walks around here?”. 37 You will know places and paths you’ve never heard of before even if you’ve lived there all your life. Nothing beats local knowledge.

Oh yeah, and there’s us!

How could we forget? Every issue of Country Walking has at least 27 routes from all over the country. 40 We also let you know whether any of them is likely to be tricky (big climbs, tough terrain, lots of stiles, etc) to help you decide if the walk is suitable for you.

A. Visit your library.

B. Read walking guidebooks.

C. You’ll need to pay to use the best quality mapping.

D. These include step-by-step instructions and the maps.

E. Local governments normally provide a number of guided walks.

F. There’s plenty of help out there, both online and in the real world.

G. You might also be surprised at how many different suggestions you get.
