A student-led push to get solar panels installed (安裝)at a middle school in Tacoma is receiving national recognition from a clean energy non-profit organization calld Generation 180.The girls involved are advocating(倡導) and fundraising for the project.
Sammy Firkins, Gwen Newport and Annie Son willtalk about their idea to generate solar electricity at JasonLee Middle School inapanel discusson organized by Generation180.In 2019,the three of them teamedupwith their science teacher,Kathy Hall,to push for solar panels to be instaled.Hall, who uses solar power at her own house, said it's long been a dream of hers. The school would be the first in the Tacoma district to use solar energy.
The girls presented their idea to Gov. Jay Inslee's STEMEducation Innovation Alliance meeting in early 2019 and received enthusiastic support. They then spoke to the Tacoma school board and obtained buy-in from the district, though they were told the district did not have the roughly $\$ 200,000$ for the 277 solar panels and that they would have to fundraise. They've since raised more than half that amount through grants (撥款) and individual donations.
Gwen Newport says she's always cared a lot about environmental issues and that she's troubled that climate change does not get the atention it deserves.“At this point,I feel like it's kind ofbeen given to my generation almost as our responsibility now and so being able to be a part of this project and take action is really important to me,” she says.
The solar panels have not been installed at the school yet.But Hall says she estimates that the project will reduce the school's power costs by about $\$ 14,000$ a year, and that it also will serve an educational purpose.“We willhave live data always streaming available so that people can see how the panels are working and how they relate to the amount of electricity we're using, and it will be an incredible learning tool,” she says.
24.WhatisGeneration180?
A.Aresearch team. B.A student-led push.
C.An environmental group. D.An environment project.

ElonMusk hasoffered a prize of $\$ 100\mathrm { ~ m ~ }$ for the best carbon capture proposal (提案).Ican save his committealotof time. The moneyshould goto PeterWohlleben, whose book TheHiddenLifeof Trees was the most encouraging blockbuster of 2015.Wohlleben's idea is this:do nothing about trees. Stop fiddling(亂作為)with them, thinking that we can deal with climatechange better than nature.Ifwe fiddle, our Romes will burn.
The Hidden Life of Trees argued that trees are social. It shows that they can be our saviors.Of course, there are things we couldand should be doing, but in terms offorestry practice, often what’s billedas part of the solution is part of the problem.
Anyone who has planted a tree in their garden knows that it has a far-reaching effect—it makes your garden cooler insummer and warmer in winter.Forests coolby transpiring (蒸發).If there's no water, there's no cooling.Drought can killtrees fast, but trees have many ways of dealing with it,and Wohlleben sets them out.As a species,we have survived many climatic changes by changing our behavior—and that’s how trees survive, too.Trees learn from their past harms and produce younger ones programmed with those lessons. Mother trees regulate theirchildren's growth by changing the rate at which they drip-feed them with sugar solution through root networks.
Deciduous (落葉的) forests in particular remove greenhouse gases effectively as long as they live. Cut them downand burn them and you're releasingcarbon dioxide not just from the wood, but also from the forest floor. Deciduous trees are not“harvest-ready”at 2Oo years: They are teenagers. We must interrogate comforting expressions such as “renewable energy”,and learn the real cost of our toilet paper.
If we don't learn to do nothing about trees, they will eventually be alone anyway—but without us. Wohlleben brilliantly and readably shows us how urgent and how hard it is to do nothing.
28.What does Wohlleben suggest for carbon capture?
A.Planting more trees. B.Leaving trees alone.
C. Changing forestry species. D.Protecting trees from droughts.
29.How do trees survive the drought?
A.They slow their growth. B.They lose their leaves.
C.They stop absorbing water. D.They get help from humans.
;0.What does the underlined word‘interrogate”in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Understand. B. Question. C.Translate. D. Accept

A.Abook review. B.A science report. C.An introduction to a writer. D.A proposal for a reward

The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have found positive effects.A study conducted in Youngstown, Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with house plants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have taken it a step furtherchanging the actual composition (構成)of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they're short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater.“We're thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day,” explained Michael Strano,a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow (發光) in experiments using some common vegetables.Strano's team found that they could create a faint light for three and a half hours. The light, about one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by,is just a start. The technology,Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn trees into self-powered street lamps.
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed (噴灑) onto plant leaves in aone-off treatment that would last the plant's lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on-and-off \"switch’where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US.Since lighting is often far removed from the power source—such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway—a lot of energy is lost during transmission(傳輸). Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
32.What is Paragraph1mainlyabout?
A.Anewstudyofdifferentplants. B.Abig fall in crime rates. C. Connections between people and plants. D.Benefits from green plant
33.What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineers?
A.To detect plants'lack of water. B.To test chemicals in plants. C.To make the life of plants longer. D.To change compositions of plants
34.What are the glowing plants expected to do in the future?
A.Speedupenergyproduction. B.Transmit electricity to the home C.Help reduce energy consumption. D.Take the place of power plants.
35.Whatcanbethebesttitleforthetext?

“What is that black smoke?” Nita asked her mother as they were folding the clothes.
“Your father is burning some things.Go and see what he is up to,” she replied.
Nitaapproached her father, who was tending to a smallfire in the yard.As she drew closer, she noticed a bunch of plastic bags burning.Confusion mixed with worry filled her young mind. She couldn't help but question her father'saction.
“Why are you burning those plastic bags, Dad?” she asked, her voice full of concern.
“These bags would last an incredibly long time if we buried them.Plastic doesn't break down in the earth.Burning is the only way to remove them,Nita,”he replied.
Nita's forehead wrinkled. She felt a wave of sadness for the earth and couldn't help but voice her discontent.“But burning isn't good for the earth either,Dad.And the smoke..it smells terrible,”she complained softly.
Her father let out a heavy sigh, understanding her concern. He knelt down to her level and spoke with a touch of regret in his voice,“Iknow,Nita, butI haven't found another way to keep these bags from polluting the earth.”
That afternoon, as Nita's mother returned from the market with more plastic bags,Nita felt a growing sense ofunease. The cycle of using and burning plastic bags seemed endless, and she longed for a solution.
Later that day,Nita found herself watching her father work on cutting shirts for his clothing business. Her mind wandered, thinking about the problem at hand.Suddenly,an idea occurred to her.“Maybe Ican create something useful with the leftover fabric scraps (碎布)!” she thought excitedly.
