In a growing number of schools, educators believe that having students take part by starting with practical problems is a great motivator.Project-based learning that freely crosses disciplines (學科) provides an education superior to the traditional “maths at age nine, history at ten, literature at eleven” structure.Examples of projects applicable to the here and now are as follows:
SoilSuperheroesProject
KingMiddleSchool,aine
Seventh-graders learn about soil bacteria (細菌)by creating multimedia information brochures. They consult profesional microbiologists and cartoonists, conduct research, and then distribute their works to local garden centers and flower shops.
AfricanWildlifeDNAProject
HighTechHigh,California
An eleventh grade biology class uses DNA to help protect African wildlife. The students share their findings with wildlife-protectionofficials and have traveled to Tanzania to lead bushmeat-identification workshops.
WaterWheelProject
FerrywaySchool,Massachusetts
Fifth-graders explore history, science, technology, and engineering by designing their own water wheels.By the time they visit the nearby Saugus Iron Works, which dates back to the 1640s,they've already tested and mastered the centuries-old technology.
Bridge Project
KentuckyElementary School, Ohio
Students conduct surveys,do research, build models and take field trips with the goal of determining the best kind of new bridge to build over the Ohio River.Students don't restrict themselves to one discipline but rather look into maths, literature, history, science—whatever is appropriate to the study.
21.What is the characteristic of project-based learning?
A.Following strict disciplines. B.Engaging in real-world issues.
C. Starting subjects at different ages. D.Adopting teacher-centered class modes.

Jules Verne was bornon8February,1828 in the French cityof Nantes.Froman earlyage,he had a fascination with explorationand discovery. When he was six,his teacher,Madame Sambin, told himstories aboutherhusband, who disappeared while traveling the worldonaship3O years before. She told her class that he was like Robinson Crusoe,a fictional castaway who lived ona desert island.Verne would later write stories about similar characters.
In 1847,Verne was sentbyhis family to studylawatauniversity in Paris, but he preferred to write novels, poems and plays. After graduating,he realized he wanted to write science adventure stories. This had neverbeen done before, but Verne was sure that it would bea success. His first story,Five Weeks in a Ballon, was published in September 1862.His career lasted for more than 40 years, during which time he wrote more than 60 gripping stories.
To begin with, Verne wrote positive and optimistic books. Many of these were to be his most popular creations.Although some included fantastical elements, they were usually based on scientific facts, making them believable. These happy stories weren't to last.As he got older,Verne became less confident in the idea that science and technology were always good for the planet. His books started to include more scientists who used technology for their own—sometimes evil(邪惡的)—purposes.Verne died on 24 March,1905,but new books continued tobe published until 1919.These stories were based on ideas Verne had written about while he was stillalive, but featured newcharactersand plots createdby hisson,Michel.
In the 2Oth century, his books were translated into more than 140 languages. His creations have been recognized asan inspiration for many scientists and inventors.Manyof the futuristic ideas from his most popular books have since come true.

In college,I usually anticipated icebreaker games at the start of some classes. We would introduce ourselves. It was fun to see the look of surprise on everyone's face when I said I was a chemical engineering major in creative writing seminars where most were English or comparative literature majors.
Their surprise would usually fade once the semester began and they learned that I wasn't very good. But it didn't mater;Iloved the writing classes.I didn't much care—how and whether my classes would impact my career.I liked science and writing,so maybe I'd combine them,or maybe not.
But I know my experience is not exactly typical for scientists.I'm sure some students love science so much that they have no interest in non-science classes. And science students may find the workload so high that pursuing(追求) outside academic interests is impractical.
But Ihave this fear that some science students avoid branching out,not because they don't want to,but because they believe they're not supposed to.They see their peers (同齡人) keeping their heads down, only focused on science, science, science, and they don't want to be the freaks (怪人) who admit loving their optional medieval history seminar. I've seen this trait in the students I taught.
In college, although my department head let me take writing classes, other professors didn't share the same open-mindedness.I sometimes doubted whether it was what I was supposed to do.The science,we're told,is the important part. The other subjects are either requirements to bear or distractions to give up halfway. A good grade in organic chemistry? Amazing! You're going places! A good grade in a poetry seminar? Well...
You can be a scientist and do other things, too. In college,so many options for classes! You suddenly transition from a life where it's supposed that you have known enough to live to one with a variety of choices.
28.Why did the author as a science student choose the writing seminar?
A.To play a scientific game. B.To satisfy his personal pursuit. C.To investigate the brain function. D.To seek more opportunities for his career
29.What characteristic does the author find in some ofhis students?
A.Developing outer academic interests.
B.Focusing on doing better at medieval history.
C.Escaping expanding their fields out of peer pressure.
D.Showing no interest for non-science classes naturally.
30.What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us?
A.Self-doubt is the cause of poor grades.
B.Everysubject makes foryourachievements.
C.Scientists are open-minded in academic study.
D.Great importance isnot attached to all the subjects.
31.What does the author want students to do according to the text?
A. To author for science. B. To develop a hobby in college.
C.To become a well-rounded scientist. D.To specialize in science in college.

After years of observing human nature,Ihave decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance, curiosity and discontent.I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Together, these deep human urges (驅策力) count for much more than ambition.Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground.Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why?Why?Why?”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don't have to be learned. We are born with themand need only tc recapture them.
“The great man,”said Mencius (孟子),“is he who does not lose his child's heart.”Yet most of us do lose it.We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start? One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven’t any special ability? Most people don't; there are only a few geniuses. You haven’t any time? That's good because it's always the people with no time who get things done.Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom's Cabin while cooking. You're too old? Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now,for you'll never be more alive than you are at this moment.
32.What does the example of Galileo tell us?
A.Trial and error leads to the finding of truth. B.Scientists tend to be curious and ambitious. C. Creativity results from challenging custom. D.Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore
33.What can you do to recapture curiosity and discontent?
A.Observe the unknown around you. B.Develop a questioning mind.
C.Lead a life of adventure. D.Followthe fashion.
34.What does Paragraph 6 mainly tell us to do?
A. Keep active in life. B.Try to get things done creatively.
C. Just start with no more excuse. D.Remain curious when approaching success.
35.Whatcanbethebesttitleforthetext?
A.CuriousMindsNeverFeelContented B.Reflections on Human Nature C.TheKeystoAchievement D.The Qualities ofGeniuses
