Once upon a time, two hungry men got from a venerable elder two presents:a fishing rod and a basket of live fish. They parted from each other after one took the basket of fish and the other the fishing rod.The one with the fish made a fire right at the place, cooked a pot of fish soup and wolfed it down in a twinkling of an eye before he knew the delicious taste of the fresh fish. Soon he was starved to death beside the empty basket.
The other one, enduring the torments of hunger, stumbled along the road toward the seashore with the fishing rod in his hand. Unsteadily he walked and walked and when he saw the blue sea not far from him , his last ounce of strength was exhausted. Helplessly he fell down and died with deep regret.
Many years ago, two hungry men got from the venerable elder the same presents! a fishing rod and a basket of fresh fish. But instead of parting company from each other, they decided to make a long, arduous journey to the seashore together. Each time when they needed for food, they only cooked one fish to ease their hunger. They walked and walked and finally they came to the seashore, where they started to make a living as fishermen.
A few years passed. Each man built his house and fishing boat. Each man got married, had his children and lived a healthy and happy life.
Anyone who cares only for the immediate interest is bound to have a fleeting moment of pleasure. Anyone who aims high must face the reality in life.
He who combines his ideal with practice will hopefully succeed in achieving his aim. This is a simple reason, which sometimes is profound enough to enlighten us on the truth of life.
