Look back in anger is a play written by John Osborne about a love triangle involving an intelligent but disaffected young man Jimmy Porter, his upper-middle-class,impassive wife Alison, and her snooty best friend Helena Charles.Cliff,an amiable partner, attempts to keep the peace. In Jimmy Porter,Osborne created what came to be seen as a model of the\"angry young man\"-railing at the lack of passion of his age.The play was a success on the London stage. The first production of John Osborne's Look Back in Anger in 1956 provoked a major controversy still it opened the doors to other young writers who dealt with contemporary problems.
The characters and the themes of the protagonists are reflected everything at a glance by the languages they used, the way of their speaking and all kinds of sounds produced by actions from both outside and inside of the room and the protagonists'hearts. From the sentence patterns and dynamic static integrated sounds we can feel and touch the atmosphere of the play better.
The language has the power to shock. At the very appearance,Jimmy begins with a rhetorical question to ask himself\"Why do I do this evening Sunday?Different books, same reviews\"This loud sound gives us the first impression on Jimmy. He is malice, importunate man and hates to repeat the routine life style, maybe an unsuccessful intelligent. The dialogue between Cliff and Jimmy won't go on smoothly. His long, loud tirade only gains short, calm response from Cliff. He despises others as ignorant man and peasant.Comparing to that, the sound made by Alison is smaller and flat, she simply asks Jimmy\"what's that?\"absently.She is numb and careless. She is used to coping with Jimmy by super tolerance.Overcoming hardness with softness and overcoming motion with standstill are her ways to be against Jimmy's noise. After a series of impassioned rhetorical questions still get no responses, the loud speaking in this quiet, lifeless narrow space bursts into shouting by Jimmy, which is named by Cliff as yelling.Cliff's obedience and taking no effect on heart show him an easy and warm man,a natural counterpoint to Jimmy's sensitiveness and pride.
The loud or small sounds are not only from the throat but from the actions as well.Jimmy bangs Cliff's paper violently and throws the paper back. The dynamic Jimmy, the relative static Alison and Cliff show their characters and emotions respectively. The exclamatory sentences are also frequently used by Jimmy to express his strong feeling, such as\"How I hate Sundays, how I long for a little ordinary human enthusiasm\"So we can feel better of Jimmy's anxious nerves and his desire to hear a warm, thrilling voice cry out.He wants the fierce discussion, even if the opposite opinions. It is a pity that his dream meets the silence from both Alison and Cliff. This kind of unbalance response nearly drives him mad.The imperative sentences are also suitable for people like Jimmy to express himself, such as\"Take them off,and I will kick your back.\"Comparing with Jimmy's noise and threatening,Alison still keeps calm and she keeps on her ironing. She seems to lose the ability to resist her life. She seems to have a very good adaptive capacity.Comparing with the common and unromantic sentence patterns of Alice,Jimmy used to declarative sentences, the short sentences begin with\"no...\"can be used perfectly to show Jimmy's complaints.\"Nobody cares, thinks,no beliefs,no convictism and enthusiasm.\"The loud vent still arouses no response but silence or nonstop ironing. When Jimmy himself is tired of no audiences' monodrama,he begins to search sounds and wants to listen to the concert. He turns on the radio to escape from the embarrassing and also tries to make himself cool.If Jimmy falls into muse sometimes, there are no sounds in the air and the cold war breaks out in their own ways.Even Jimmy shouts at Alison\"Hi pusey\"hoarsely,waiting for no scream or furious reaction as he expects. The fire of anger lights up but passes in a moment, and she carries on with her ironing.
The air is full of impatience and anxiety, mixing with sounds from paper reading, radio and ironing.Everyone is making a din.The air is burning and will break at any moment.Footsteps begins to twitch dangerously,Jimmy can not bear it any more and turns the radio off.Sounds in Look back in anger seem to be the best signal to show the atmosphere changes in this one-flat room.Jimmy once said he hates every possible sound from Alison:she draws the curtain back with a great clatter,in that casually destructive way of hers, her sitting at dressing tables, dropping their weapons and banging down her make up.Sounds become the points to disturb their nerves. The sound of outside church bells also caused Jimmy's wrath and discontentment. He rushed to the window and shouted\"Wrap it,stop ringing\"to show his anger towards the reminder of the power of the established church. The dynamic and static state begin to convert when Jimmy and Cliff grappled,Alison burned her arm in pain because Jimmy managed to push Cliff on to the ironing board. Then the one who used to be silent and tolerant began to shout at Jimmy finally and let him to get out, clear out of her sight. After Jimmy got upstairs to get his triumph, only Alison and Cliff left. There is no noise or quarrelling any more,Alison's tears harshen her voice in fact, she is not so strong and impatient as she looks but always at the edge of breaking. We can hear Alison's yammer and inner monologue at the very bottom of her heart.Maybe she will never hear the warm and tender words from Jimmy like:\"Yes,darling,I know just what you mean.\"Under Cliff's asking again and again,Alison who used to hide worries is full of hesitation to tell Cliff she gets pregnant.
From the analysis above we can see the sentence patterns, pitch of their language and sounds from their actions are can be seen as one of the most important aspects to reflect the characters and the themes skillfully.Through a series of comparisons among them,we can enter the hearts of the characters.
