On October 1， 1949， Mao Zedong solemnly （莊嚴(yán)地） proclaimed the founding of the People’s Republic of China at Tiananmen Square. During the Berlin Blockade （June 1948—May 1949）， the Soviet Union blocked all ground travel into West Berlin， and the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 were perhaps the most famous. The reunification of Germany effectively marked the end of the Cold War.

On October 28， 1886， the Statue of Liberty was dedicated （贈(zèng)送） to the United States. Located on a 12 acre island， the Statue of Liberty was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States. It is a symbol of freedom and democracy（民主）. It is designated （指明） as a National Monument （紀(jì)念碑） in 1924 and restored for her centennial （百年紀(jì)念） on July 4， 1986.
