I have been fascinated by the beautiful and extraordinary country of China ever since I was a child.I felt a mysterious and inseparable relationship with this country for the longest time.I have lived in Beijing for ten years, during which time I have witnessed China’s extraordinary development, especially the progress made in protecting the environment. While working in the Italian Department of China Media Group,I took business trips to many beautiful places in China. From the three northeastern provinces to the southern regions,I noticed China’s increasing efforts to protect the country’s environment.
In recent years,I have had the opportunity to visit many places with clear water and green mountains. The southern regions are famous for their ancient culture and rich cuisine. They are also renowned for their lush plants that can be seen everywhere. Some plants can even be found on bridges and under overpasses. In addition, many cities, such as Guangzhou,Fuzhou, and Xiamen, have a lovely green color due to nature intermingling with metal and concrete.
It is not tricky for southern provinces with suitable climate conditions to have a large amount of vegetation, unlike northern regions that are subject to relatively poor weather conditions. But to this day, when I try to recall one of the most beautiful and evocative images I have enjoyed during my years in China,I close my eyes and let my mind wander to Saihanba National Forest Park. The park contains beautiful grasslands, endless forests, and magniflcent wetlands.I remember arriving at this place after taking a bus from a small town for about two hours.Watching through the bus window,I admired the landscape of cultivated hills dotted with spruce and birch trunks. The sight made me look forward to the beauty of the national forest park where I was about to arrive.
Saihanba National Forest Park is located in the northernmost part of Hebei Province,China, bordering on the southern part of the Hunshandake Sandy Land in the Inner Mongolia Plateau. What makes it unique is that it is home to the largest artiflcial forest in the world. Thanks to the people’s decades of work, patience, and dedication, the extensive forest grew year after year in the middle of a desert. As a result, the Saihanba people have created beautiful countryside and livable places for future generations.Furthermore, they made an outstanding contribution to the environment.Saihanba National Forest Park is “the source of water, the hometown of clouds, the world of flowers, the ocean of trees, and the paradise of birds.”It fully embodies China’s ecological miracle. For tourists, especially foreigners,it is hard to imagine that this vibrant park was covered by yellow sand more than 50 years ago,and there were no trees to provide bird habitats.During my trip to Saihanba,I learned that the Saihanba Mechanical Forest Farm was established in 1962 to reduce the sandstorms that plague North China in the spring. In the same year,369 young people from 18 provinces in China gathered here and started the hard work of planting trees on the sandy plateau.
During the visit,I met Mr.Wang Lijun, the person in charge of Saihanba National Forest Park.He told us some exciting details about what motivated him to work for the national park: First,he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his parents, who were older workers on the forest farm.Wang Lijun also told us that there are nine watchtowers in Saihanba, and forest rangers use binoculars from these towers to observe the forest every 15 minutes.Year after year, the ranges watch diligently to prevent flre.In the 60 years since the establishment of Saihanba Mechanical Forest Farm, more than 20 families have taken care of these watchtowers, and there has never been any flre during this period.
In addition to having the largest artiflcial forest in the world,Saihanba also offers unique local delicacies, such as sauerkraut noodles, stewed flsh in an iron pot,and nasturtium tea, which show the closeness between residents and the land.
During the visit,I also visited other equally unique places, such as Qixing Lake, which is a well-preserved wetland. It provides a habitat for various birds and presents a peaceful environment to visitors with beautiful scenery. While visiting other parts of the park, something special also caught my eye:many wind turbines stand on the horizon and blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Thus,I witnessed China’s use of renewable energy.
When I close my eyes,I will recall those still colorful pictures in my memory. But,now I open my eyes again, and I see Chinaa country that I have lived in and is still living here, which has special meaning to me.The place-is walking its path flrmly and confldently, holding a glorious past in one hand and a future full of new opportunities in the other.
