word-a-day：

acquiesce 默許（不及物動(dòng)詞）

（intransitive verb） To reluctantly agree without continuing previous objections; to consent by silence.

EXAMPLE： After months of procrastination and disagreeable arguments， my friend finally acquiesced to his doctor's surgical recommendations.

在經(jīng)過(guò)數(shù)月的拖延和不愉快的爭(zhēng)論之后，我的朋友終于默許了醫(yī)生的手術(shù)建議。

charcuterie 熟食（不可數(shù)名詞，法語(yǔ)）

（NON-COUNT NOUN， FRENCH） Smoked or cured meats served cold，especially pork products. （NOTE： final “e” is not silent）

EXAMPLE： The elegant hotel restaurant served guests a large platter ofcharcuterie at the start of every dinner.

這家優(yōu)雅的酒店的餐廳在每頓晚餐開(kāi)始時(shí)都為客人提供了一大盤(pán)精致的熟食拼盤(pán)。

clamber 攀爬（不及物動(dòng)詞）

（intransitive verb） To climb awkwardly using both hands and feet.

EXAMPLE： The serious and determined child clambered up the stairs.

這個(gè)認(rèn)真而執(zhí)著的孩子費(fèi)力地爬上了樓梯。

colloquium 學(xué)術(shù)研討會(huì)（名詞）

（noun） An academic conference with formal presentations anddiscussions focused on a particular topic. （NOTE： plural form“colloquia”）

EXAMPLE： Every year the university's medical school organizes a

colloquium on cancer attended by doctors from all over the world.

每年這所大學(xué)的醫(yī)學(xué)院都組織一次有關(guān)癌癥的學(xué)術(shù)研討會(huì)，世界各地的醫(yī)生都來(lái)參與。

dogs 腳（復(fù)數(shù)名詞，俚語(yǔ)）

（plural noun， SLANG） Feet. （NOTE： always used in plural form）

EXAMPLE： Sometimes， instead of taking the bus， I walk home afterwork， but when I get to my apartment， my dogs are really tired.

我有時(shí)下班后不坐公交，而是走路回家，不過(guò)在走到公寓后，我的腳就很累。

finalize 敲定（及物動(dòng)詞）

（transitive verb） To conclude a process， especially a project plan or anagreement.

EXAMPLE： After weeks of negotiation， we believe we can now finalizethe new contract today.

在經(jīng)過(guò)數(shù)周的談判之后，我們認(rèn)為，今天能夠敲定新合同。

gnaw啃（及物動(dòng)詞，不及物動(dòng)詞）

（transitive verb， intransitive verb） To chew something tough.

EXAMPLE： I like to give my dog a large bone to gnaw.

我喜歡給我的狗一塊大骨頭，讓它去啃。

phrase-a-day：

Dont be so sure！ 你說(shuō)的不對(duì)！

A casual way of saying you believe someone is mistaken.

EXAMPLE： I laughed and said “Don't be so sure！” when my brother predicted the stock market will be stronger next year.

當(dāng)我的兄弟預(yù)測(cè)股市明年將漲得更好時(shí)，我笑著說(shuō)：“你說(shuō)的不對(duì)！”

janitorial services 清潔服務(wù)（商業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)）

（BUSINESS） Routine activities involved with cleaning a commercial building.

EXAMPLE： Dependable janitorial services are essential to maintain the cleanliness and proper appearance of our company's many offices.

可靠的清潔服務(wù)對(duì)于保持我們公司的眾多辦公室的清潔和良好形象至關(guān)重要。

nondurable goods 不耐用商品

Products that are typically used one year or sooner after purchase by the customer.

EXAMPLE： Most of what we sell in our market are nondurable goods that we must watch carefully for signs of spoilage.

我們市場(chǎng)上銷(xiāo)售的大部分是不耐用商品，我們必須密切注意商品腐敗的跡象。

Pull up a chair！ 坐下聊！（非正式用語(yǔ)）

Informal invitation to sit down and talk.

EXAMPLE： When I saw a new neighbor walk into my favorite restaurant yesterday while I was eating lunch， I told him to pull up a chair so we could get acquainted.

當(dāng)我看到新鄰居在昨天走入我最喜歡的餐廳時(shí)，我對(duì)他說(shuō)，請(qǐng)坐下來(lái)，我們好好聊聊。

to have seen better 一般般

Phrase used to express a non-committal， slightly negative opinion in reply to another person's comment or inquiry.

EXAMPLE： My friend asked me about the new movie we both saw that he really liked， but I shrugged and told him that I've seen better.

我和朋友在昨天看了一部新電影，他非常喜歡，問(wèn)我有什么看法。我卻聳聳肩，對(duì)他說(shuō)一般般。

the calm before the storm 暴風(fēng)雨前的寧?kù)o

A tranquil， inactive moment before a period of great activity or conflict.（NOTE： also “the lull before the storm”）

EXAMPLE： For several months before the big holiday our business is always slow and we never make many sales， but that quiet period is just the calm before the storm.

在重大節(jié)假日之前的幾個(gè)月，我們的生產(chǎn)總很清淡，根本沒(méi)有銷(xiāo)售額，但這個(gè)清淡期只是暴風(fēng)雨前的寧?kù)o。
