I come from India and am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Human Anatomy and Embryology at Southern Medical University. During this scorching summer, I joined my classmates and friends on a splendid summer trip to Renhua County, Shaoguan City in northern Guangdong province. An invaluable opportunity to explore the vast and beautiful landscapes of China, the journey also allowed us to experience firsthand the vivid implementation of eco-friendly development concepts and witness the transformative impact that rural revitalization has had on this once-impoverished and isolated area.
In conquering Mount Danxia, I was ultimately conquered by it. Renowned as “China’s Red Stone Park”, Danxia boasts unique geological formations and a rich biodiversity. Its crimson cliffs, like the veins of the earth, are a testament to billions of years of history and change.
Standing on the Ziyu Platform, the iconic peak of Mount Danxia, I was utterly captivated by the breathtaking view. The layered red cliffs resembled masterpieces meticulously carved by nature, each radiating the marks and forces of time. We took photos to capture this rare beauty. Closing our eyes and feeling a deep resonance with this land, we listened to the wind whisper and the birds call.
China’s commitment to environmental protection is truly commendable. Mount Danxia, known for its extraordinary landforms and vibrant colors, showcases nature’s craftsmanship at its finest. The reddish-brown cliffs and lush green vegetation create a magnificent scene unfolding before the eyes. This place is not only a natural wonder but also a model of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. The local residents respect and adapt to their environment, preserving valuable natural resources and a rich cultural heritage.
A short distance from the foot of Mount Danxia lies Xinlong Village, which resembles a picturesque painting and reveals the gifts of time and nature in every direction. However, years ago, it was a poor and backward area with adverse living conditions, characterized by mud houses and muddy roads. Deforestation and inadequate infrastructure further exacerbated challenges faced by villagers. Today, Xinlong Village has undergone a remarkable transformation: it is shaded by green trees, with new houses standing tall along roads that are smooth and flat. This transformation is a direct result of the Chinese government’s rural revitalization strategy. The entire nation, from the government to society, has worked together to promote the living standards and environment in rural areas.
As the sun set, we concluded our day of exploration in Xinlong Village, filled with profound emotions about this place. It is just one representative of the transformations across northern Guangdong, as many other villages have also been revived by the rural revitalization strategy.
The primary destination of our trip was actually a primary school—Chengbei Primary School in Renhua County. We had already promised the children there to bring a unique cultural exchange lesson.
The summer in northern Guangdong was sweltering, but the children’s enthusiasm and hospitality were even more impressive. I had prepared interactive programs to make learning fun and introduce them to the wonders of multiculturalism.
During the cultural sharing session, I highlighted Indian customs, festivals and cuisine. The children listened carefully, their eyes sparkling with a curiosity about the world beyond their village. I also taught some simple psychological games, such as “Emotion Puzzle”, where they learned to identify and express their feelings by assembling different facial expressions.
This experience opened a window to the world for these children, and I believe they could play a significant role in shaping the future. Chinese culture advocates for “different but inclusive” and “harmony in diversity”. When the seeds of cultural exchange take root in these young minds, they are sure to blossom brilliantly. Thinking about this prospect always fills me with immense excitement and anticipation.
Having lived and studied in China for over a decade, I have traveled from Yunnan to Lingnan, from the beautiful ancient city of Dali to the bustling commercial hub of Guangzhou, encountering many beautiful Chinese stories along the way. I am committed to becoming a good storyteller for China to help the world discover the vibrant and enchanting reality of the country.
