On Olympus(奧林匹斯山), there once lived twelve gods and goddesses who ruled the universe. These gods and goddesses controlled the seasons, the weather, and the growth of crops. They also rewarded people who pleased them and punished those who did not. Despite their powers, the Greek gods often showed the weak points in human nature. They were often angry, impatient, jealous, and deceitful (不誠(chéng)實(shí)的).
At the wedding between the daughter of sea god Thetis and the hero Peleus, Eris, the goddess of discord, determined to revenge for not being invited. She secretly threw a golden apple bearing the words “For the Fairest” on the banquet table.
Three goddess—Hera, the queen of heaven; Athena, the goddess of wisdom and Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty and love, who attended the wedding all declared themselves to have the possession of this apple. They argued fiercely against each other and couldn’t decide the owner of the apple. At last, the prince of Troy was invited to make the final decision for the golden apple.
In order to get the golden apple, three goddesses respectively (各自地) promised to offer Paris power, wisdom and the most beautiful woman in the world—Helen. Paris chose Aphrodite as the owner of the golden apple, which annoyed the other two goddesses. They swore (發(fā)誓) to revenge the Trojans someday, and it resulted in the ten-year war between the Trojans and the Greeks.
