Champion的含義知多少

美國時間2015年4月12日下午，希拉里.克林頓在Youtube上發布了名為“Getting Started”的宣傳視頻，宣布參加2016年美國總統大選。在視頻的最后，希拉里說了下面這段話。

I’m getting ready to do something， too. I’m running for president. Americans have fought their way back from tough economic times but the deck is still stacked in favor of those at the top. Everyday Americans need a champion， and I want to be that champion. So you can do more than just get by. You can get ahead. And stay ahead！ Because when families are strong， America is strong. So I’m hitting the road to earn your vote. Because it’s your time， and I hope you’ll join me on this journey.

其中加粗的這一句引起了很多人的誤解，原因就是人們對句子中的champion等詞理解不到位。下面筆者就圍繞champion這個大家不太陌生的詞來展開討論。

漢語對“冠軍”的定義

《現代漢語大詞典》對“冠軍”的定義為“指體育運動等競賽中的第一名，也泛稱得第一者”。從這個定義中，我們看到，漢語“冠軍”一詞既可以表示冠軍的頭銜稱號，也可以表示擁有這一頭銜的人。比如下面這兩個句子。

a. 劉翔贏得冠軍。

b. 劉翔是冠軍。

在a句中，“冠軍”是頭銜，在b句中，“冠軍”是指奪冠者本人。很多人會認為漢語的“冠軍”完全等同于英文的champion，因此把上面兩句譯成如下的英文句子。

1. a. Liu Xiang won the champion. （×）

b. Liu Xiang was the champion.

這里的a句是錯誤的。錯誤的原因是champion并不完全等同于“冠軍”。下面我們來看英文詞典對champion一詞的定義。

英語對champion的定義

《新牛津英漢雙解大詞典》對champion作名詞時的釋義有如下兩個。

①第一個釋義為“a person who has defeated or surpassed all rivals in a competition， esp. in sports”，意思是說“在一場競賽（尤其是體育競賽）中戰勝或超越所有競爭對手的人”，這就相當于漢語“冠軍”的意思。但是，從這個定義中的a person可知，英文中的champion表示“冠軍”的含義時，只能表示“人”，而不能表示冠軍頭銜或稱號。

②第二個釋義為“a person who fights or argues for a cause or on behalf of someone else”，意思是說“為了某個事業或他人的利益而奮斗的人”，此時champion的意思相當于漢語里所說的“捍衛者”“支持者”“聲援者”“擁護者”“衛士”等等。此時一般搭配是“a champion of …”，比如a champion of financial probity （財政清廉的倡導者）、a champion of women’s rights （婦女權利的捍衛者）。

《柯林斯高階英漢雙解學習詞典》也給出了類似的釋義：“If you are a champion of a person， a cause， or a principle， you support or defend them.”該詞典還給出了下面的例句。

2. He was once known as a champion of social reform.

他曾經是社會改革的擁護者。

再來讀讀兩個類似的例句。

3. He became the determined champion of a free press.

他成了新聞自由的堅定捍衛者。

4. She was a champion of the poor all her life.

她終生都是窮苦人的衛士。

以上都是champion作名詞時的含義。《柯林斯高階英漢雙解學習詞典》對champion作為動詞的釋義如下：“If you champion a person， a cause， or a principle， you support or defend them.”顯然，這個動詞含義與上面作名詞的第二個含義相關，可以譯成“支持”“擁護”“捍衛”等意思。請看例句。

5. He passionately championed the poor.

他滿腔熱情地捍衛窮人的利益。

6. He became a man who championed human rights.

他成為一個人權衛士。

7. She championed the cause of religious freedom.

她捍衛宗教自由的事業。

現在我們回到上面希拉里所說的句子：“Everyday Americans need a champion， and I want to be that champion.”這里的champion不是“冠軍”的意思，而應該是“某人利益的捍衛者”的意思。我們看到，上面圖片中把champion譯成了“捍衛者”，是正確的。但是譯文誤把everyday當成了every day，因而譯成了“每一天”，這是錯誤的。實際上，everyday是一個形容詞，在這里的含義為“普通的、平凡的”（ordinary），修飾后面的名詞Americans，合起來就是everyday Americans，意思是“普通的美國人”，與該句的前一句話中出現的those at the top （社會上層的美國人）構成語義對比關系。我們一起來讀讀這兩句話。

8. Americans have fought their way back from tough economic times but the deck is still stacked in favor of those at the top. Everyday Americans need a champion， and I want to be that champion.

解析：這兩句話中有一個語言點—the deck is stacked，它由美語stack the deck演變而來。這里deck是“一副撲克牌”（a deck of cards）的意思。美語說stack the deck，英語說stack the cards，字面意思是“洗牌”，但真正含義是“在洗牌中做手腳（作弊）”（to cheat at a card game by arranging a deck of cards in a special way）。因此，該短語后面常常接against sb.以表示對某人不利，或接in favor of sb.以表示對某人有利。希拉里說的“the deck is still stacked in favor of those at the top”意思就是說“形勢對那些社會上層的人士有利”。然后，她緊接著說到everyday Americans （普通美國人），說他們需要自己的利益代言人或利益捍衛者，而她希望成為那個捍衛者。

很多人因為誤解了everyday和champion，沒有看到those at the top與everyday Americans內在的邏輯語義對照關系，因此把這句話翻譯如下。

原譯：美國已經從艱難的經濟形勢中恢復，但機遇仍然存在并青睞那些位于頂端的人。每一天，美國都需要一個冠軍，而我希望成為那個冠軍。（×）

根據以上分析，筆者建議改譯如下。

改譯：雖然美國人已經走出了經濟困境，但是形勢依然只是有利于社會上層人士。普通美國人需要自己的利益捍衛者，而我愿意成為那個捍衛者。

Championship的含義

上面說過，champion作為“冠軍”理解，只能表示得冠軍者，不能表示冠軍頭銜，這點與漢語不同。英文中的“冠軍頭銜”要用championship一詞。《柯林斯高階英漢雙解學習詞典》對championship釋義是：“The championship refers to the title or status of being a sports champion.”也就是說，championship是“冠軍頭銜”“冠軍稱號”的意思。請看下面的例句。

9. Two more points and the championship will be his！

再贏兩分，冠軍就是他的了！

10. They’ve held the championship for the past two years.

他們在過去的兩年里一直保持著冠軍地位。

11. He has won the championship for the third time in a row.

這是他連續第三次奪得冠軍。

12. She managed to retain the championship.

她成功衛冕了冠軍。

由此可以看出，例1的a句“Liu Xiang won the champion”是錯誤的，應該改為“Liu Xiang won the championship”。

《柯林斯高階英漢雙解學習詞典》對championship的第二個釋義是：“A championship is a competition to find the best player or team in a particular sport.”這就是我們常說的“錦標賽”或“冠軍賽”的意思。比如，“NBA大賽”可以說成The National Basketball Association Championship，而the women’s figure skating championships就是“女子花樣滑冰錦標賽”。請看例句。

13. He won a silver medal at the European Championship.

他獲得了歐洲錦標賽的銀牌。

14. Greece won the European Championship.

希臘隊贏得了歐洲錦標賽。

此外，《新牛津英漢雙解大詞典》對championship還有第三個釋義“the vigorous support or defence of someone or something”，意思是“對某人或某事的大力支持、極力保護”。這顯然與champion的“捍衛者”之義相呼應，比如 “their championship of the homeless”（他們對無家可歸者的利益的保護）。

綜上所述，“冠軍”與champion并不完全等同：漢語中“冠軍”的意思包含“得冠軍者”和“冠軍頭銜”，對應的英文分別是champion和championship。最后值得提醒的是，類似champion與championship這樣“人”與“頭銜”相對應的詞，英文中還有很多，比如member/membership、professor/professorship、director/directorship、reader/readership等。請比較下面的一組例句。

15. a. Zhang Yimou was the director of the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games.

b. Zhang Yimou took on the directorship of the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games.

我們看到，a句表示“張藝謀是導演”，b句表示“張藝謀擔任導演”，這在漢語里也許區別不大，但在英文中使用了不同的詞。再比如下面這組例句。

16. a. She was a professor.

她是教授。

b. She was appointed to the professorship.

她被聘為教授。

還要注意的是，有的表達身份或頭銜的詞不是以-ship結尾，比如 president對應的是presidency。

17. a. Obama was the president of the United States of America.

奧巴馬是美國的總統。

b. Obama won the presidency of the United States of America.

奧巴馬贏得了美國總統一職。

對于這種英漢差異，請讀者務必仔細辨別，謹防出錯。
