On the Matching in Genre in Lin Yutang’s Translation of Chinese Classics:A Study in Terms of Compositional Translatology

WANG Yu-hong

Abstract: Lin Yutang, one of the greatest writers in the 20th century, is world-renowned for his English writings and translations of Chinese classics. His unique integration of writing and translation originates from the traditional Chinese compositology. In the terms of Compositional Translatology put forward by Prof. Pan Wenguo, Lin’s translations of Chinese classics exhibit a perfect matching in genre with the source text, which is achieved through a comprehensive consideration of the core rhetorical elements in Chinese (rhyme, antithesis, syllable and tone) and then proper transformation of them with due English rhetorical means that make the translations as appealing as the original in both genre and literary strength. Lin’s success in translating Chinese classics justifies the claim of “three matching in meaning, genre and literary strength” in Compositional Translatology, among which the matching in meaning is the prerequisite, the matching in genre the key step, and the matching in literary strength the ultimate pursuit of translators.

A Tentative Study of Creative Treason under Gadamer’s Fusion of Horizon

CHAI Su & ZHAO Yan-feng

Abstract: Inspired by Robert Escarpit’s relevant theory, Chinese scholar Xie Tianzhen advanced creative treason in translation studies for the first time in the late 20th century. It widely received great attention in the past two decades. Based on the other Chinese scholars’ critical ideas on this theory, a broad consensus has been reached that creative treason takes place in the process of Hans-Georg Gadamer’s Fusion of Horizons. This paper attempts to elaborate and crystallize the features like selectivity, considerateness, optimality of creative treason when conflicts, estrangements, expectations of horizons occur.

Studies on Translation Ethics within China Revisited: Reflections and Criticism

YANG Rong-guang

Abstract:A bibliographical analysis has been conducted for a comprehensive description of the status quo of studies on translation ethics within China over the past twenty years (1996-2021). Based on critical analysis of the key thematic issues, the existing literature are classified into three categories, i.e. introduction of western theories, infusion of Chinese local resources and systematic construction of translation ethics, both as a body of interrelated knowledge system and as a discipline. A thorough analysis of the thematic issues reveals that there are still problems of misinterpretation and inappropriate application of western theories, unclearly defined core concepts and insufficient response to new changes in related industry. These findings underscore the need for studies starting from issues within translation itself, and for researchers to explore ethical issues regarding translation industry, translation technology and translation pedagogy.

From Translating to Non-translating: An Interpretation of Translation Based on the Context of National Anthem Law

QIN Jun

Abstract: The National Anthem of China, an audible national image, stands for the sovereignty and dignity of China. The translation of the National Anthem of China should be carried out in the context of the National Anthem Law. This paper studies the origin and international influence of the English translations of the National Anthem of China. Based on the interpretation of the National Anthem Law, it also points out the recent research of the English translations of the National Anthem of China has violated the National Anthem Law, the singable translated words of the National Anthem of China does not meet the context of the law. The ultimate purpose of translation is not to translate, translational action should follow the principle of from translating to non-translating, so as to make the target audience trace and return to the source text, and finally learn the source language and appreciate the works in the language and then promote its culture to the world.

Philosophical Ontology for the Syntax of Mandarin Chinese: A Comparative Study of Aristotelian Logic and Mohist Logic

MAN Hai-xia

Abstract:Bothtraditional grammar and its important concepts of parts of speech and subject-predicate structure can be metaphysically traced back to Aristotle’s theory on categories and predication. Existing studies on Chinese grammar have proved that analyzing Chinese sentences with such a grammar of Aristotelian tradition can generate many problems due to Chinese’s lack of morphological markers. Thus, we should go back all the way to ancient Chinese logic—Mohist logic for the logical foundation of Mandarin Chinese by comparing the two logics in terms of how each of them relates basic concepts to languages and the world, and how a logical judgement is formed from basic concepts therein. A formalized way is put forward to show how logical statements are made by natural languages with the assistance of combinators in combinatory logic so as to better explain the differences shown by the two logics and the two languages that the two logics grow from. A world-subjectivity-language model is thus proposed for future studies on the syntax of Mandarin Chinese.

Key words: Aristotelian logic; Mohist logic; Mandarin Chinese; syntax; combinator of subjectivity

A Corpus-driven Discourse Analysis of the Chinese Economy in the German Media

LI Sha-sha & XUE Wen-yu

Abstract: The German media has constructed a significantly negative image of China in the 2000s. In order to find out how the situation has become in the 2010s and whether there has been a change during the decade, this paper looks into the news reports on the Chinese economy from the German mediafrom 2012 to 2020. Methodologically, this study explores the application of modern corpus-driven methods in the traditional research field of discourse analysis, namely combining the Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic model, dependency parsing with qualitative discourse analysis. The results reveal that, in the category of domestic economy, China is represented as the reformer and the developer, which are mostly associated with positive emotions. The dominant image of China in the category of economic relations is, by contrast, the competitor with negative connotations.

Key words: corpus-driven discourse analysis; discourse-historic approach; German media reports of China

A Cross-language Analysis of Syntactic Island Effect

YI Bao-shu & NI Chuan-bin

Abstract: Syntactic island is first put forward by Ross (1967), who finds that it is of great difficulty to extract some elements from some syntactic structures, such as complex noun phrases, coordinate structures, adjunct structures, subject sentential structures and left branches, which Ross metaphorically regards these syntactic structures as islands, where some rules of movements can not be carried out. From the perspective of typology, this study analyzes the syntactic island effects in wh-movement languages and in-situ languages, by reference to relevant empirical studies. It is found that one or more types of syntactic islands could be obtained in most of languages in the world. However, some researchers question the existence of syntactic island effects in in-situ languages, such as Chinese and Japanese, in which wh-words do not need to cross a syntactic node or many syntactic nodes to the beginning of the sentences. The future studies are supposed to focus on the cross-language analyses of island effect as well as the empirical studies and mechanism of syntactic island effect.

Key words: syntactic island; wh-movement languages; in-situ languages

The Way towards Marx: Lukács’s Thought Resources

WANG Yin-hui

Abstract: The complexity and diversity of Lukács’ thought resources has become an important issue in academic circles. His thinking gradually moves from Neo-Kantism and Hegelism to Marxism, which does not reduce the complexity of his thinking. Taking the 18 important English editions of Lukács as the research object, the impact on Lukács in different stages can also be found by collating and retrieving the ideological resources of important writers and theorists in a scientific data way. In these 18 works, Lukács discusses the top five writers in the order of Goethe, Balzac, Tolstoy, Thomas Mann, and Shakespeare, and the top five theorists in the order of Hegel, Marx, Kant, Lenin, Engels. It is the sublation, absorption and development of them that gives birth to Lukács’ Marxist literary theory, aesthetics and ontology.

Key words: Lukács; thought resources; pluralism; Maxism
