Dr.ValerieVaughan-Dick:我深感榮幸能擔任RIBA的首席執行官。
Dr.ValerieVaughan-Dick:我們正在積極推進國際戰略的制定。

WA: itis a great honor to interview you here in Shanghai. We have hnd quitea long preparation between RiBA and Worid Architecture Revew magazine for thisinterview.
Firstly,we would like to know about your futune plans as the CEo of RiBA,regarding intemational relationships.
Dr.Valerie Vaughan-Dick: I am truly proud to serve as the CEO of RIBA. With members spanning the globe,we number around fifty-eight thousand. We are building a burgeoning network of individuals who exchange knowledge and experiences. As an organization,we embody the pinnacle of architectural and built environment excellence. We have five key objectives that we pursue not only in the UK but also internationally, promoting excellence and best practices.
We collaborate with various organizations to raise standards and explore innovative ways of designing and delivering homes, workplaces, as well as buildings where people want to learn.Allof this emphasizes quality and sustainability With the current related challenges, it is an exciting time for architects to consider how they can approach their work differently.
WA:As an international organization, haw does RlBA promate its key initiative and plansworldwide?
Dr.Valerie Vaughan-Dick:As an organization, wehave a trustee board and our council, which provide advice and approve policies. In 2023,it was decided that we would focus on five strategic priorities.
1.The first priority is the climate emergency. We are facing the biggest challenge, not just for our profession, but for the whole planet. It is imperative that we take action on this matter.
Architects play a critical role because nearly forty percent of carbon emissions come from buildings.lf we can design buildings differently or retrofit existing structures to reduce their carbon emissions, we will be contributing to addressing the climate emergency.RlBAis a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact and Sustainable Development Goals. Consequently, we are committed to ensuring that our actions and deliverables may contribute to reducing waste and using sustainable materials, thereby addressing the climate emergency.
2.Secondly, we focus on equity, diversity and inclusion. We aim to drive forward change so that there are no barriers for people, Regardless of their gender. religion, or any other factor that may hinder their entry into the profession.
3.Thirdly,our members are our lifeblood. We must ensure that we develop relevant policies, practices, and tools to serve our members.
4.Our fourth strategic priority is practice influencing. As an organization,we can represent the global network of architects at various forums, which is something our members highly value.A practice on its own cannot have the same influence as an organization like ours.
5.Lastly,we focus on the House of Architecture. The House of Architecture is dedicated to modernizing and making our existing buildings in the UK more sustainable and welcoming
Additionally,we have our collections, which houses 4.6 million artifacts spread across five different sites,We aim to bring them together so that individuals can view them.We want people to take pride in learning about our strong heritage. Finally,we aspire to be a digital organization. We want to digitize the collection so that we can share it with a wider audience.
These five areas are crucial for us to advance our mission and make a positive impact.
WA:Has RiBA made new agenda to lead the progress of architecture?
Dr.Valerie Vaughan-Dick;We always have to make sure we focus on the climate emergency. At the same time,we should start to focus on new technological approaches.I think that’s the biggest challenge. As technology is advancing quite rapidly and globally,we all must ensure that we are exchanging information and learning from each other. We also want to make sure that we are addressing some of the issues that our members are discussing, and that we are providing the right support and service.
WA: Considering your trip to China,we anticipate more collaboration between the RiBA and local institutions and companies. We would like to know your advice on the design thinking of the younger generation of Chinese architects and the development of the industry.
Dr.Valerie Vaughan-Dick:When we examine a building project, it’s not just the design, but also construction and ensuring, the involvement of engineers. There are a whole host of different professions involved in a particular building project, and new ways of doing things are continually emerging. So individuals in the different professionsmust ensure the effective sharing of information and expertise. And architects cannot just work in isolation
Therefore, individuals in different professions need to ensure that they are sharing information and expertise.Architects cannot afford to work in isolation; it is crucialfor them to collaborate with other professionals in the building environment.Additionally, one cannot simply work within their own country, as other countries may have discovered more interesting, innovative, and cost-effective approaches to various challenges.Sharing expertise and collaborating is absolutely critical.
WA: Do you have any suggestions to for architects wha wish to go abroad and get suppartfrom the RIBA?
Dr.Valerie Vaughan-Dick: We need to consider implementing initiatives related to future leaders, similar to those in our future-leaders membership programs. This is necessary because we occasionally receive feedback indicating that some individuals feel they have not been able to engage sufficiently. In such cases, it is imperative that we take appropriate action. It’s related to organizational matters.
Providing those opportunities through universities or colleges is one way.and we offer a variety of short-term courses. There will be ways for individuals to get involved and learn. They can also share relevant information with us,and we have structures in place to assist tbem in achieving their goals.
Please do not hesitate to contactus,we will collaborate with these individuals to provide the necessary support.
WA:Even in the current market environment, tbe number of lozal members of RiBA has shawn a continuous growth trend,Over the past three years,we have estahlished a very strong collaboration with local RIBAchartered members,RiBA Cityroom@szU belongs to the larger plan of the RlBA international collaboration, especially in China and EastAsia.
We wonderif you would like to see this kind of collabaration as one of the multi-diverse options of the RiBA in China.
Dr.Valerie Vaughan-Dick: I believe the model you have described is exactly what we need to examine, replicate, and implement at RIBA,
We have also created the ‘Future Architects initiative, which serves as a community and a global platform for early-career architects and students. It focuses on collaborating, sharing ideas and tackling challenges.
Essentially,it aims to improve the building environment in the future. However,if we have a relationship with the university,it would be absolutely ideal for facilitating that kind of local grassroots collaboration. And if we can spread and roll out that model,it would be absolutely perfect.
WA:We maintain a strong connection with RlBA China, and we are hopeful for ruitful outcomes from our callaboration with RiBA and the local market, Therefore,we propose that RiBA could provide us with very strong support for realizingthis bright future.
Dr.Valerie Vaughan-Dick:We are actively developing an international strategy. We have representatives across different continents, who will contribute to that strategy I will ensure that I learn more details about this initiative and that it can be considered as a case study.I believe that others would be eager to learn about it as well.Instead of speculating on what might happen, you are presenting with us something that is actually happening, and people worldwide will be interested to hear about it.Therefore,I am highly interested in this initiative.
WA:Thank you very muchwed ke to see our collaboration may be a cross-region platform between Hong Kong,Macau, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.in south China.
