Japan for Sustainability)

Shell turns to wood chips and straw in search for the road fuel of the future
A new road fuel made from wood chips and straw will be launched in Europe later this year from a pilot plant developed by Shell and Choren Industries, the German biofuel company. The synthetic diesel, made using a novel biomass-to-liquids (BTL) process, will shift the biodiesel industry into a higher gear by using waste plant material instead of valuable food crops. The pilot plant, near Freiberg, will produce 15,000 tonnes per year of synthetic diesel, which Choren has dubbed Sunfuel. Construction of a much bigger plant in Schleswig-Holstein, costing 500 million and capable of producing 200,000 tonnes of BTL, will begin next year in an effort to quickly bring the product up to commercial scale.
Epson Switches to Eco-Friendly Printer Ink Cartridges and Packages
Seiko Epson Corporation has switched the packaging for the ink cartridges used in its large format ink-jet printers from conventional white cardboards to 100% recycled brown cardboard, and has standardized its packing specification internationally. The gray dyed plastic used for its ink cartridge casing was also changed to colour-free plastic. Epson were able to change to a single type of package as a result of this standardization; they used to have a range of packages corresponding to the various models, ink colours and specifications of overseas markets. By switching to colour-free ink cartridges, Epson can eliminate colouring agents and reduce some of the molding processes, which will contribute to reducing the environmental impact of the production processes. At the same time, it is anticipated that the company will improve the recycling efficiency of raw materials, as colour-free plastic can be used for a wider range of purposes. Companies Must Redistribute Wealth
European companies must give workers a fairer share of their soaring profits or they risk igniting a ‘crisis in legitimacy’ in the continent’s economic model, Peer Steinbruck, Germany’s finance minister warned. Joaquin Almunia, the European monetary affairs commissioner, suggested workers were not getting their full reward from rises in productivity, stating that he does not think it is a sustainable position. His concerns were echoed by Thierry Breton, France’s finance minister, who spoke of the need to ‘redistribute wealth created by companies’ and by Jean-Claude Juncker, the Luxembourgish head of the 13-country eurogroup, who said a ‘big debate’ had started on sharing the fruits of Europe’s long-awaited recovery.
