【Abstract】The Piece of String reveals the cruelty of the society. The story is interpreted in four aspects, that is, its style, structure, point of view and protagonist.
【Key words】French-like;structure;third-person point of view;protagonist
The Piece of String is a traditional novel. The language used in this story is very formal. It is very much French-like. It seems the story takes place in France. The places like \"Goderville\", \"Breaute\" and \"Manneville\" seem to be the names of French places. The money used by the people in the story is franc. In the story, the lost wallet contained five hundred francs, and the finder of the wallet could be paid a reward of twenty francs. Although it is translated into English, there is still the characteristic of French. It remains a lot of French words. It does not use \"Mr.\" before a man's surname. Instead, it uses \"Monsieur\" as mentioned in the story Monsieur Malandain was the harness maker. Words such as \"petit verre\" and \"va\" are written in French.
The structure of the story is ingenious. It uses foreshadowing. For instance, Master Hauchecorne picked up a piece of string. He was seen looking for something by Monsieur Malandain. So Master Hauchecorne was ashamed, and pretended to look on the ground for something else, which he did not find. Here is the foreshadowing. It provides the evidence for the development of the story. Master Houlbreque lost his wallet. Unfortunately, Master Hauchecorne was suspicious to have picked up the wallet. And Monsieur Malandain can even become the witness. The action of ashamedness is interpreted as he hunted a long while in the mud, to see if some piece of money hadn't fallen out. It is written in a way which attracts the reader to read on to get the result of the story.
The story is written in the third-person point of view. The third-person narrative provides an abundance of detail in description, dialogue and action that subtly shapes the reader's judgment of the characters in the story that deals with the very process of judging. The third-person narrative offers the reader an objective view. The reader can have his own idea of the truth and the 1 facts.
The protagonist of the story is no doubt Master Hauchecorne. He is an honest man. He still tells the truth until his death although no one believes him. He never gives up the truth. He is also never afraid of the authority. He consists in the truth. When he meets his acquaintances, he repeats again and again his story and his protestations, showing his pockets turned inside out, to prove that he had nothing. In January he died, even in the delirium of his death agony still protesting his innocence, repeating, \"A little piece of string - a little piece of string - see, here it is, Monsieur mayor.\" The antagonist is the other people in the town. They are cruel and ignorant. They do not know the fact, but they do not believe the fact Master Hauchecorne says. They took the gossip as the truth. When Master Hauchecorne tells them the truth, they just laugh at him. They criticized him as an old fox. He was accused guilty for his denying of picking up the wallet. It is a cruel society.
