論if和whether引導的賓語從句

九年級英語新教材講了if和whether都可以引導賓語從句,并都是“是否”的意思,它們的這種用法有什么區別?能否互換?下面筆者分別敘述如下:

一、可以互換

像一些及物動詞say, ask, know, wonder, decide, inform, advise等,后接含有“是否”意思的賓語從句時,用if或whether都可以。如:

1. I dont know if/whether the letter is overweight. 我不知道這封信是否超重。

2. Im wondering if/whether these figures are accurate. 我想知道這些數字是不是準確。

3. Ask if/whether Tom is at home.

問一下湯姆是否在家。

4. Lily asked if/whether she liked it.

莉莉問她是否喜歡它。

5. Lucy asked if/whether they were too expensive. 露西問它們是否太貴。

二、不能互換

當if和whether互換后容易引起誤解和混淆時,則不能互換。如:

Please tell me if he has a car. 此句有兩層意思:①如果他有輛小汽車的話,請告訴我一下。②請告訴我他是否有輛小汽車。按第一種譯法,if 引導的是條件狀語從句;第二種譯法,if引導的是賓語從句。如果說話人要表達的是問對方“是否”有汽車,用whether 最好。

用if 或whether來引導賓語從句,在實際使用上到底哪種情況用哪一個,需慎重考慮,因為它們在用法上是有區別的。下面從這幾個方面加以論述:

A. if 多用在口語中,而whether多用在書面語中,特別是在正式文體中。如:

1. Mother asked me if I could help them.

媽媽問我是否能幫助他們。

2. I put it to you whether thats the best solution of the problem. 我提出讓你考慮,究竟這是不是解決問題的最好辦法。

B. 有些動詞(如discuss)后,不能用if,只能用whether。如:

Lets discuss whether we shall go there by plane. 我們討論一下是否坐飛機去那里。

C. whether強調“懷疑”、“選擇”,它引導的賓語從句可以跟“or”, “or not”, “or no”等。如:

1. I dont know whether I should accept or refuse. 我不知道我該接受,還是拒絕。

2. I dont know whether they are coming or not. 我不知道他們是否要來。

上句中的or not 如果省去的話,用if也可以。美國英語口語中也有用“if…or not”的,但我們還是認為用“whether…or not”句型為好。

若句中無“懷疑”、“選擇”之意,無論用whether還是用if都不恰當。如:

I dont doubt whether she is right.

我們看出,主句謂語動詞是“不懷疑”,賓語從語是“她是否對”,自相矛盾,類似這樣的情況,我們可以不用whether,改用that 來引導賓語從句,變成:I dont doubt that she is right. 我不懷疑她對。

D. 賓語從句放句首,這時就不能用if, 只能用whether。如:

1. Whether that is a new car or not, I cant tell. 那是否是輛新車,我不知道。

2. Whether or not Mike broke the glass, I dont know. 邁克是否打碎了玻璃杯,我不知道。

3. Whether that is her pencil-box or not, I cant say. 我說不上那是不是她的鉛筆盒。

E. whether 引導的賓語從句可以用在帶to的動詞不定式之前,也可以作介詞的賓語,而if引導的從句則不能這樣用。如:

1. Will you advise me whether to accept the offer or not? 請教你,我是否要接受那提議?

2. We worry about whether we hurt their feelings. 我們擔心是否傷了他們的感情。

3. The building depends on whether they have enough workers and money. 樓房取決于他們是否有足夠的資金和工人。

F. 當問話人把握性較大或期望得到肯定的答復,應用if;如果問話人對肯定或否定答復都不介意,就用whether。如:

1. Shall I ask the shopkeeper if I can try it on? 我問店主能否試穿一下好嗎?

2. Will you ask Tom if he has that book?

你可以問一下湯姆他是否有那本書嗎?

有時陳述句也能表達這種意思。如:He asked if/whether I was sure my mother would come. 他問我是不是能肯定我媽會來。(如果用if, 期望得到肯定的答復“我確信她會來的”,改用whether,“來不來”則無所謂,隨便問一下而已。)
