Unit 1
I happened to meet my classmate Li Ming when I was wandering in the street. Surprisingly, he told me that he was upset because the College Entrance Exam was coming, but he felt tired of studying. I wondered if it’s because he was so concerned about the exam that he couldn’t calm himself down any longer. Later, I advised him to see the doctor and have a face-to-face talk with him. Exactly speaking, the doctor gave a series of suggestions to him, so he set them down in his notebook and he recovered soon after he followed the doctor’s advice.
Unit 2
Recently, I had an interview with Max, the English Star of our school and we talked about English learning methods. The reason why he began to learn English was that at present English is playing a more and more important part in modern society than ever before. Besides, actually, he lost lots of chances because of not knowing English well, such as talking with foreign teachers, finding a job, promotion and so on. He realized (was aware of ) the importance of learning English and began to learn English, which was based on British English. What’s more, he made full use of his time, enriching vocabulary and practicing listening and speaking. Believe it or not, with his frequent efforts, he conquered English gradually and had a good command of listening, speaking, reading and writing of English.
Unit 3
Jordon Romero, a thirteen-year-old boy from America, climbed the Qomolangma successfully and became the first youngest man to climb the mountain, which has an altitude of 8848 meters. He was fond of climbing when he was a child, and successfully climbed other highest mountains of the other six continents. Before climbing, he said that he was determined to climb it and if he couldn’t reach the peak this time, he wouldn’t change his mind either. Jordon’s parents tried to persuade him not to take any unnecessary risk and if he was in trouble, such as the bad weather, he’d better give in and return home. As usual, he had a positive attitude to climbing and prepared well for his journey.
Unit 4
A terrible earthquake struck Tangshan on July 28, 1976, which was known as one of the most terrible disasters in China in the 20th century. However, the earthquake which happened in Wenchuan on May 12, 2008 and in Yushu on 14th April, 2010 are believed to be the largest ones since 1949 and it seemed that the world was at an end. They both not only caused great damage to the people but also destroyed many schools and other buildings, so hundreds of thousands of people were trapped or buried under the ruins. After the earthquakes, rescue work was organized right away and a great number of people were dug out. Temporary shelters were put up,which were safe for the survivors to live in.
Unit 5
Born on July 18, 1918 in South Africa, Nelson Mandela devoted himself to fighting for black people to get the same rights as white people. It was 1952 when he set up law office to help poor black people in Johannesburg, and later this year, law office was closed by the government because he attacked anti-black laws. As a matter of fact, he was sentenced to five years hard labor in 1962 because of encouraging violence against anti-black laws. He became the first black president of South America and came to power in May 1994, before which he failed many times, but he didn’t lose heart. In order to praise his contribution to peace and freedom, people in South Africa chose July 18 every year as the Mandela International Day. 責任編校蔣小青
