A Study of the Main Problems and Improvements of Senior English Teaching under the New Curriculum Standards

Abstract: The New Curriculum Standards has not only given impetus to China's quality-oriented education, but also enhanced the students' enthusiasm of self-learning. However, many problems still exist in senior English teaching. For example, teachers excessively depend on the textbook and teaching methods are still backward. Based on the current situation, this paper analyzed the main problems exsiting in senior English teaching and how to improve it in the context of the New Standards.

I. Introduction

The New Standards emphasize that everything is for the development of students, requiring teachers not only to fully excavate and display a variety of ethical considerations in the process of teaching, but also to guide students to develop the correct moral performances. Thus, teachers' missions nowadays is not just to teach the students the basic knowledge and skills, but should focus on the process and methods of learning, developing students' emotions, attitudes and values.

II. Main problems of senior English teaching

A.Teachers excessively depend on the textbook

Many English teachers can not flexibly process the textbooks according to the real situation and characteristics, just teaching the materials in every unit even section orderly no matter whether it is the highlights, resulting in many problems.[ ] For example, they can not complete the teaching schedule on time; teaching highlights are also not distinguished. The effectiveness of teaching and learning is very low.

B.Teaching concepts and methods are still backward

Although some teachers agree with the “Teacher-led, student-centered” teaching ideology and give students certain learning permission to some extent, they do not really establish a democratic, harmonious and equal relationship between teachers and students. The dominant position of the students is still under the teachers leading. Thus, laying down the law and cramming teaching methods are commonly existed.

C.Teaching activities focus on the form but ignore the content

Teaching activity is one of the important teaching tools, yet some teachers do not fully perceive it. Some teachers organize a variety of activities, making the class relaxing with students actively involved. But the teaching content only contains “playing” but not “l(fā)earning”. Connection between activities and teaching content is not close. Thus, the class seems active but students do not learn anything from it.

III.Strategies to improve senior English teaching

A.Improve teaching accomplishment

Teachers need to learn new concepts of teaching, such as cognitive learning theory, subject strategy, etc. Using these kinds of theories can help them to organize their teaching more effectively. When designing the class, teachers need to establish and ensure the dominant position of students. It is also necessary to break the traditional mode of teaching and make innovation, shaping their own teaching characteristic.

B.Focus on developing students' comprehensive ability of using language

Teachers should improve students' language skills and the ability of using English by guiding them doing practices. It is also necessary to master basic language knowledge for it is the foundation to compose ability. Besides, students' emotional attitude is one of the concerns, so teachers need to continue stimulating and strengthening students' interest in learning English, guiding them gradually turn this inters into stable motivation. [ ] And teachers should give students time and space for their independent learning, giving them opportunity to use English analyzing and solving the problems by associating and inductive reasoning.[ ]

C.Appropriate use of media

Teachers can not entirely abandon the traditional teaching forms like blackboard and chalk and completely instead them by media. They need to correctly understand the pros and cons of the traditional methods and modern media methods, using both of them in combination.[ ] For example, setting up an English courseware library on school website that allows students to share on-line resources. By doing so media can truly inject vitality into the classroom, diversifying their choices of learning methods.

IV.Conclusion

All in all, we must adopt effective strategies in teaching and abandon the drawbacks of traditional teaching mode, combining the science, humanism and socialism of teaching. Highlighting the center of students' development, teaching them to think independently and cultivating their ability of solving problems are all complementary with the new curriculum standards.
