其實，“貼貼”一詞并非國內網友首創，而是源自日語“てて”1。這個詞是“尊い”（とうとい）的簡化，在書面語中有“崇高”“貴重”的意思，在網絡語境下則又多了一層“太棒了”“好喜歡”的含義。2018年，日本粉絲將“尊”說成“でて”，用以表示兩位虛擬偶像間的親密關系—“てえてえ”這層“親密”的含義由此流傳開來。

This sense of intimacy quickly caught on and spread， making T え a popular means of expressing affection online.

“てえで”被國內網友巧妙地譯為“貼貼”。在日語本義中，“貼貼”作為形容詞，本身就帶有“喜歡的”“親密的”等含義，其動詞用法又有“湊近，靠近”的含義，和日語本義相當契合。兩種用法合二為一，賦予了“親密”這一含義以動作的趨向和姿態，拓展了表達功能。比如，我們在看言情劇時，常常會看到有彈幕讓男女主人公“貼貼”。這就是在用“貼貼”表示男女主人公之間的親密關系，也表達了網友對這一對“屏幕情侶”的喜愛和支持。在日常生活中，人們同好友或伴侶聊天時，可以用“貼貼”來表示關系的親近；在對方傷心難過時，也可以用充滿暖意的“貼貼”給予安慰和支持，這時的“貼貼”就趨近于動詞的虛擬動作用法了。
